1950-07-10 : Rocky Marciano 188¾ lbs beat Gino Buonvino 199¾ lbs by TKO at 0:25 in round 10 of 10

  • Location: Braves Field, Boston, Massachusetts, USA
  • Referee: Joe Zapustas

The night Marciano fought Buonvino at Braves Field in Boston proved to be a surreal experience for all involved, because the fight took place amid a steady drizzle, under poor lighting, and within a ring that was antique and dilapidated. "I'll never forget that night," a bemused Marciano would say two years later. "It was raining and they put the fight on early. And what a ring. It was really small and tilted. I felt like I was fighting uphill all night."

Arthur Siegel of the Boston Traveler was unimpressed by Marciano's tenth-round TKO victory. He wrote that the heavyweight field must be "a stinker" if Marciano was a leading contender, because the Brockton heavyweight was nothing more than "a good club fighter." [1]
