"Ernie 'Indian Red' Lopez of Los Angeles, the #1 rated welterweight contender, scored the 24th knockout of his career when he stopped Jose Baltazar of Mexico in the 5th round of the top preliminary. Lopez, 150, tagged the 145 lb. Baltazar with a right hand to the jaw late in the round and the Mexican went down. He was up at the count of five, but groggy, and referee Dick Young called a halt. Baltzar then collapsed to the canvas before being revived by his seconds." -Associated Press
