"Carlos (Morocho) Hernandez of Venezuela, the world's 2nd ranking contender, entered his bid for a shot at the 135 lb. crown by knocking out 37 year old Joe Brown with a right to the jaw in the 3rd round Monday night, after flooring him for a count of eight in the 1st round. Brown, who had twice postponed the scheduled 10 round bout because he claimed he needed more time to train, tried to run out on the fight Monday afternoon but was stopped at the Maracaibo Grano de Oro Airport when he attempted to take a plane to Maiquetia." -United Press International
- A report stated that Brown claimed that he tried to leave because he had had a disagreement with the promoters over his purse. However, a spokesman from the U.S. Consulate insisted that Brown was not trying to leave the country but that he was at the airport to pickup excess baggage, which had been delayed in its arrival from Argentina.
