Briggs was stripped of the IBU title shortly after winning it in this fight. IBU president Don "Moose" Lewis announced in a press release that he decided to strip Briggs of the belt after receiving a phone call from boxer Dennis McKinney, who told Lewis that he was planning to fight Briggs in September 2003 and wanted to know when he could expect to receive an IBU belt of his own "when" he won. "Mr. McKinney has a record of 25-27-1," Lewis wrote, "and in no way qualifies to fight for any IBU title." Lewis added that "to have an IBU Champion fight boxers with a losing record is an insult to the other great IBU Champions and Promoters who put their bodies and finances on the line every time they step into the ring or a ticket is sold." Thus the title was vacated. Lewis concluded his statement by saying: "The IBU will not punish a champion who fights the best and loses-for if he does, he does not lose the name of champion but only the title he held-and as Scarlett O'Hara said, 'Tomorrow is another day.'"
In an interview with the now-defunct website boxing-central.com conducted in October 2003, Briggs said that he agreed to fight for the belt because he thought it would be a "a nice conversation piece in my living room," but added: "Had I known that the [IBU] President...was going to put out fake press releases misquoting me and making me sound retarded I would have taken my sanctioning fees elsewhere."
