A knockdown was ruled in Round 2 as Mayweather pressed down on the back of Melo's head and landed two rights to the body. He was up at the count of two, but was surprised at the knockdown ruling. Melo came forward, feinted with a right hand, and threw a huge left hook that snapped back the head of Mayweather. By the end of the round, both men were bleeding from the nose. A right uppercut followed by a left hook put Melo down at 2:22 of Round 3. He got to his feet at the count of three, but informed Steve Smoger he did not want to continue.
