Francesco Damiani won the Super Heavyweight silver medal representing Italy at the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. He was the first boxer to hold the WBO heavyweight title. He was supposed to fight Evander Holyfield in November 1991 as a replacement for Mike Tyson, who had pulled out of the scheduled bout due to an injury. However, Damiani himself injured his ankle and pulled out a week before the fight. (Holyfield went on to fight Bert Cooper instead.) Damiani retired after his loss to Oliver McCall.
