Since his retirement, McGirt has become a highly regarded trainer. Among those that he has trained are Antonio Tarver and Arturo Gatti. He won the Boxing Writers Association of America Trainer of the Year Award for 2002.

His son, James McGirt Jr., is also a professional boxer.
