No, this is not the author James Jones of "From Here to Eternity" (1951), although he was in Hawaii at this time. The novelist had returned severly wounded at the batlle of Guadalcanal early 1943 and was getting medical care before being returned to the US in 1944. He used the expirience in "The thin red line" (1962) In biografies James Jones is often listed as a "prize fighter" and "Golden Gloves contender". The last claim is true. According to Andy Turner on "The James Jones Litterary Society Newsletter", Jones was in a Golde Glove tournament in Terre Haute, Indiana around 1937.
