"World bantamweight champion Lionel Rose of Australia survived an 8th round knockdown at the hands of Filipino Ernie De La Cruz and punched out a majority 10 round non-title decision Tuesday night before 4,109 fans. Rose, ring rusty, was tuning up for a title defense against Ruben Olivares of Mexico in Los Angeles in August. Rose had pecked out a narrow margin on all three official cards by the 8th round but at the 2:20 mark Cruz thrashed a right to the champ's jaw and staggered him. As Rose tottered, Cruz followed up with another right that drove the champion to the canvas for the mandatory eight count. Cruz lost any opportunity to win a decision, however, when he was less than aggressive in the final two rounds." -Associated Press
- Unofficial AP scorecard - 47-47 Draw
- This was Rose's first fight since breaking his hand against Alan Rudkin in March.
