Maria de las Nieves Garcia of Mexico City, Mexico, was the WIBF lightweight champion in 1997-98. She defeated Daniella Somers for the belt on March 29, 1997, in Las Vegas.

In 1998 she was part of what promoter Don King's matchmaker called a first for him. Her bout with Christy Martin in Madison Square Garden on June 6 was called off at the pre-fight physical the day before after Garcia was found to be 21 weeks pregnant. She said she did not know she was pregnant, and three different tests were done ... all coming up positive. According the New York Times, she stood to make a career-high purse of $15,000 in what would have been a Showtime televised bout.

There is no record of Garcia fighting again. She finished her career at 2(0)/1(0)/0, losing to Laura Serrano, but defeating Somers and Helga Risoy. She was still ranked #10 among lightweights by the IFBA in 1999.
