Biography

  • When not officiating, Sammon works as a stockbroker in San Jose, California.
  • Officiated 50+ World Championship matches as judge or referee.
  • Listed as "Referee #5" in the credits for the 2004 Academy Award Winning motion picture Million Dollar Baby.
  • Member of the boxing team at Santa Clara University, where he earned a degree in finance in the mid-1950s. Also as a member of the ROTC, Sammon was "commissioned as a second lieutenant in the United States Army after graduation."
  • First experience as a referee came at San Quentin State Prison where he agreed to referee bouts between the inmates. Note: He was not an inmate.
