Professional Career

Matthew began his professional career on September 23, 2000 with a points win over David White who too was making his debut. He was victorious in his first thirteen bouts winning six by technical knockout and on May 6, 2004 defeated Rob Burton (9-6-2) by points to claim the BBBofC Central Area Welterweight Title. Six months later he would again defeat Burton to win the BBBofC Central Area Light Middleweight Title. In 2007, Hatton claimed the vacant IBF International Welterweight Title with a win over Frank Houghtaling (19-12-5) and also defeated Edwin Vazquez (22-9-2) that same year for the IBF Inter-Continental Welterweight Title. His most notable loss came in May of 2008 via a unanimous decision to Craig Watson (12-2) for the Commonwealth (British Empire) welterweight title. In what is thought to be his best career victory thus far, Hatton scored a unanimous decision victory over the aging former World Title Condender Ben Tackie (29-10-1). Of note, however, Tackie came into the bout having lost his four previous fights and was defeated six years earlier by Matthew's elder brother, Ricky Hatton.
