  • Title had been vacated by Oscar Maldonado in order to challenge Jorge Eliecer Julio for the interim WBO Bantamweight title in July 1997.
  • Mexico City's Joel Zarate was scheduled to fight Martinez but he pulled out when it looked as if he would get another shot at WBC champion Gerry Penalosa. Jesus Sarabia was next in line for Martinez, but he also fell out.
  • Badillo down in rounds 4 and 9 from left hands to the jaw.
