  • Fought a ten-round draw with Gerrie Coetzee, the WBA's #1 heavyweight contender and future champion, in 1983.
  • Defeated Tim Witherspoon by a twelve-round majority decision to win the WBC Heavyweight Championship in 1984.
  • Defended the title with an eighth-round knockout of Mike Weaver in 1985.
  • Suffered his first defeat and lost the title in a big upset to Trevor Berbick by a twelve-round unanimous decision in 1986.
  • Knocked out in six rounds by Mike Tyson in 1987 in an attempt to win the WBA/WBC Heavyweight Championship.
  • Defeated Craig Payne by a twelve-round split decision to become the first IBO Heavyweight Champion in 1992.
