In 1959 he was beaten in the finals by Jack Clements, but reversed the loss the following year to win a berth as a light welterweight on the 1960 Canadian Olympic team and a trip to the Rome Olympics. In Rome he scored a first round kayo in his first bout over Luxembourg's Francois Sowa, but was disqualified in his fight with Kim Deuk-Bong for not breaking clean.
