In 1954 Robert St. John won the Novice New York City Golden Gloves' championship at flyweight over Tommy Kelly.

In 1955 fighting out of the PAL Headquarters won the New York Daily News Golden Gloves' open championship at bantamrweight over Richard Adams of the W.134th St Parks Dept. and won the won the New York Golden Gloves Tournament of Champions also at bantamweight.
