As an amateur, Roger Rouse was a NCAA Champion at 165 pounds for Idaho State University in 1956 and 1957. Rouse also represented the United States in the 1956 Olympic Games at Middleweight, losing in his opening match in the quarterfinals to Gilbert Chapron of France on points.

Rouse is a 1983 inductee into the Idaho State University Sports Hall of Fame.
