Terry Smith, a native of England, began his ring career as an amateur boxer. Coached by his father, he fought as a prep school athlete in England, and later in the United States when boxing was an intercollegiate sport. After initially attending Gonzaga, Smith was recruited by coach Hank Elespuru to Sacramento State, where he won a national 156-pound title in 1959.
