National Boxing Association World flyweight title
referee: Jess (Duke) Kenworthy
American Flyweight Title
World Flyweight Title
(As recognized by California.)
According to the ringside report in the Los Angeles Examiner, LaBarba was knocked down in the first round while Rivers was down in the second, third, and ninth rounds. The fans felt that Rivers slipped rather than being knocked down in the second, despite the fact the referee started to count. Although it was felt that LaBarba won handily, Rivers, a 4-to-1 underdog, fought a "game, aggressive, and fast fight." The referee was listed as "Lt. Jess Kenworthy of the U.S.N."
