Re: Foreman vs Liston

Power-somewhat even, although foreman had more thud behind each individual shot. Liston had a little bit more "snap" and put his punches together better. As a side note, liston was a better finisher. Foreman was very wild when going for kayos and basically just bludgeoned his victims to d...

For me Foreman always showed more heart than Sonny.
If the going got tough I'd edge George to be mentally stronger.
Liston, sure showed that he had quit when he went EIGHT rounds with a broken jaw.

Re: Foreman vs Liston

Liston was like Charles or Holmes but with a lot more power Couldn't you also say he jabbed like Jimmy Young in his day -- but with more power? ... and wouldn't that favor Liston? Young was a defensive wizard. Almost more like a Mike The Bounty Hunter. Young was only good for about 2-3 years of som...

Re: Prime Foreman vs Prime Tyson

Prime Foreman is 1970's Foreman. The Foreman that fought Stewart is not Prime Foreman. True.. An old Foreman was slower.. But Jimmy Young was too fast for a 70's Foreman... and so would Mike Tyson be. That was not a prime Foreman. How long do you think Young lasts with Mike Tyson??? How long do you...

Re: Prime Frazier vs Prime Liston

Ironically, I think a prime Frazier beats a prime Foreman but loses to Liston. Liston had the stamina and boxing ability that Foreman lacked. His speed was also superior to Foreman's by far. As was his jab. Don't get me wrong, Foreman had a great jab, though he sometimes forgot it. Sonny never forgo...

Re: Foreman vs Liston

I think a prime Liston wins... If you saw Jimmy Young outbox Foreman, popping him often with the jab... and saw a very old Liston outbox Henry Clark... and a younger but aging Liston outbox Eddie Machen... and saw Liston destroy Floyd Patterson twice... and then if you realize Liston's 1st Ali figh...

Re: Prime Liston vs Prime Tyson

All this stuff about Tyson's speed and ability to slip past Liston's jab every time is nonsense. I saw Tyson getting hit by a journeyman Ribalta, and even an over-the-hill Pinklon Thomas hit him with jabs and one-twos. Both of whom lasted longer than the "three rounds" some of you are sayi...

Re: Prime Liston vs Prime Tyson

Mike Tyson under Cus D'Amato and Kevin Rooney was on his way to being an all time great heavyweight. Tyson became a different fighter when he parted ways with them. He became a head hunter and lacked discipline and patience. Although Tyson never had great stamina he was able to go the distance of 1...

That's correct , just like Floyd Patterson

Patterson with much faster hands than Tyson dominated Liston

Patterson made Liston look like a fool. Liston didn't even land a single punch on Patterson. Oh wait... :OhYes:

Re: Prime Liston vs Prime Tyson

Prime Liston vs Prime Tyson would have been the greatest heavyweight fight of all time. Before Prime Liston suddenly became over the hill for no reason againt Clay, he was close to invincible. Prime Tyson was invincible when he had Cus and Rooney and the gang. Then when he became the only fighter i...

Re: Holmes vs Liston

Liston quit on his stool against ali and was basically a bully fighter. My ass. People like to point him out as a bully who quit when the going got tough. He didnt quit when getting hammered with bombs by quite possibly the hardest puncher of all time in Cleveland Williams. Including one that broke...

Liston's Speed underrated.

I've always thought that Liston's speed was very underrated. People just remember him from the Ali fights. Their are two things most people don't realize. One; Liston was no where near prime and very overweight. Two; Ali would've made anybody look slow. Angelo Dundee even said once, that Liston was ...

Re: George Foreman Circa 1973 V Sonny Liston Circa 1962

Gotta disagree with that assessment Ezzard. Ali seldom get's credit for the fact that he withstood some tremendous shots (they weren't all blocked or cushioned) from Foreman in the Rumble In The Jungle. Liston quit because he was losing, Foreman made a much better effort. I think of it like this......

Holmes vs Liston

I side with Liston. Holmes is one of the few guys I give a genuine chance against Sonny which shows how highly I rank both guy's abilities. The battle of the jabs would be interesting. Sonny's is more authoritative and carries much more power and dominance, whereas Holmes has a quicker, sharper jab....

I watch that video over and over. Especially the shadow boxing, the way he throws his jab. Didn't Mike Tyson describe Sonny Liston jumping rope as "orgasmic"? " This from a guy who spent time with Sonny Liston. It's perfectly apropos that Tyson put orchids on Liston's grave. He worsh...

Re: A Heavyweight Game.

Jimmy Young Now I'm not sure Young could beat Liston, but Liston's biggest weakness was guys with good movement and defense and Young certainly had those assets. I think on his best night Young would've been able to box and move his way to a decision victory against Liston, likely enduring some kno...

Prime Tyson vs Prime Holmes

Some people have this mythical view of Mike Tyson, this belief that with Cus he would've been unstoppable. Against Tyson you would need to be able to turn the BOXING match into a FIGHT. OF course it requires the ability to take a few punches in order to defuse the raging time bomb Tyson is in the fi...
