Re: Jimmy Young vs Scott LeDoux

Wow. Didn't know about Berbick's injury, but Sims inflicted nearly the same injury on Tyrell Biggs, breaking his collarbone in their fight. Quite a powerful guy. Maybe he was thinking of Tyrell Biggs. I saw the Young-Simms fight and I thought Jimmy pulled it out. My buddy and I had first row seats....

Re: Jimmy Clark

I remember following Jimmy Clark's amateur career closely as a kid back when he was among the elite in the USA & he frequently fought on those USA vs The World amateur meets that were shown on ABC. As I recall Howard Cosell thought quite highly of him & he was convinced that he was going to ...

Re: Give Whyte AJ and have Miller face Breazeale

I was pretty sure that the Wilder - Fury rematch would happen next but Fury's trainer said something about Fury needing some time off which would push their redux back to late summer/early fall. So, if that's the case then I could see Breazeale getting his mandatory shot in the interim. Meanwhile, t...

Re: Dominic Breazeale vs. Carlos Negrón - December 22, 2018

I see where you're coming from. Though I don't begrudge him his second title opportunity. Even though he doesn't really deserve it, of course. Especially since the WBC granted it to him based on his victory over Eric Molina. But, that's boxing politics for you...

Re: Dominic Breazeale vs. Carlos Negrón - December 22, 2018

It was a decent scrap. Negron was fighting back, but Breazeale KOed him in a spectacular fashion eventually. Actually it's a contestant for KO of the day against Whyte-Chisora KO. Do you really think it SHOULD have been a decent scrap? Negron is a nothing fighter who should have been trounced, not ...

Re: My honest assessments about Charlos vs Harrison/Korobov fights

I had the Jermell - Harrison fight even at the end 114 - 114 or 6 - 6 in rounds. It was a tight, tough fight to score in which I gave Harrison five of the first six rounds & then had Charlo sweep five of the latter six. Yes, Jermell was the aggressor throughout but he was ineffective with most o...

Re: Heavy weight best it's been in decades??

IMHO, the division is in the best shape that it's been in for quite a few years. We have three elite champions in Wilder, Fury & Joshua. Then, on the tier below them, there's Ursk, Ortiz, Povetkin, Whyte & Parker. Followed by men like Pulev, Jennings, Miller, Breazeale, Michael Hunter, Chiso...

Re: Jermell Charlo vs. Tony Harrison - December 22, 2018

I think a good portion of those who are crying robbery about this fight may have been influenced by the rather biased commentary by Fox's team on the mic. They were going out of their way to praise everything positive that Charlo did while often ignoring what Harrison was doing well. I think an argu...

Re: Spong v Perea 21/12/18

A good win for Spong in my estimation. Like I said in my previous post, Perea is a dangerous spoiler that was capable of upsetting the applecart but, broken hand & all, Spong rose to the occasion & got a solid victory over a decent veteran.

Thanks for the heads up, Tony. I'm going to have to get my hands on that one soon. I checked with my local library system to see if they had a copy to borrow but no such luck. However, while doing so I noticed that they do have a copy of HARD LUCK: THE TRIUMPH & TRAGEDY OF "IRISH" JERR...

Re: Dominic Breazeale vs. Carlos Negrón - December 22, 2018

Rocky Fielding is a good example of someone who got "smashed like he was nothing". On the other hand, Breazeale hung in there for seven rounds with Joshua & managed to get up from both knockdowns showing that he has a decent chin & a lot of heart. While he may not be my favorite he...

Re: What HW prospect gets a title shot first? Why?

Despite the OP's obvious bias against Joe Joyce he's the highest profile prospect internationally & the furthest advanced fighter on this list ( with Hrgovic coming in at a very close second place though he hasn't expanded his profile outside of Europe yet as Joyce has ) so he's likely to get a...

Re: Efe Ajagba's big RIGHT bomb

According to the latest statements from his people they're going to slow his progress down a bit by keeping him fighting in six rounders for a while against modest opposition. Which is evidenced by their booking him against a mediocre 4-3 clubfighter by the name of Santino Turnbow this weekend. Some...

Re: What would have happened to Marciano's legacy if he had continued his career. . . .

Patterson gets destroyed by Marciano no matter what age... I completely disagree. Patterson's youth, speed & underrated power would have been too much for Marciano IMO. I believe that he'd have busted Marciano's eyes up & eventually dropped "The Rock" later on en route to a stoppa...

Pastrano was a good, slick fighter but IMHO he was no Jimmy Ellis. Jimmy Ellis was the better fighter. Had they met at 175 lbs I believe that Jimmy would have done to Willie what Jose Torres did. Busted him up & stopped him in the middle rounds. My pick is Ellis via KO/TKO in about seven rounds.

Re: very exciting era at heavies

Now, there's a potential match-up that never occurred back in the '70s that could have but didn't. Jerry Quarry vs Jimmy Young. Unfortunately, by the time that such a bout would have been in demand in 1975 or so, Jerry was past his best & Young was just beginning his short-lived prime so I'd hav...

Re: Spong v Perea 21/12/18

This will be a very good test for Spong at this stage of his career. Up until now, he's hasn't really faced any live bodies so Perea should give him a stern test. Of course, Spong is a huge puncher so he could catch Perea early but seeing as how the Columbian hasn't been knocked out previously &...

Re: Dominic Breazeale vs. Carlos Negrón - December 22, 2018

I expect Breazeale's power to end matters as well but he'll have to be careful not to overlook Negron because he can punch too. Derrick Rossy is usually a pretty durable guy & Negron dropped him numerous times before finishing him inside four rounds. So, his power is no joke.

So, apparently, Kuzmin looked pretty good in knocking out Mitchell in round six of a scheduled twelve rounder. He had Mitchell down multiple times before the ref stopped the fight. I really wish that HBO had shown this fight instead of the super-bantamweight bout. Not that it was a bad fight & t...
