Re: Jack Dempsey - poor quality of opposition

it seems to me Dempsey was a protected fighter. Much like the promoters of today protect their darling paychecks. I think he was one tough SOB, his punch and his speed made him a danger to anyone who got in the ring with him. As a dream fight I would have loved to see him fight Joe Frazier. That wou...

Re: Prime George Foreman vs. a prime Jack Johnson?

Before reading the replies I was going to say Johnson. Now I don't know. I was never a big George Fan. He was a big awesome heavy puncher but I felt he was lacking some of what makes the science 'sweet'. George was overwhelming when he had opponents that fought like himself. When I think of what he ...

Re: fastest hands in heavyweight history?

I seem to remember that Cus D'amato trained Floyd Patterson, Jose Torres and Mike Tyson all of whom had a style that incorporated punches in bunches. It seems that D'Amato had a technique of teaching his fighters to punch in sequences that were learned by numbers. It is not so recognizable in Patter...

Re: Tony Galento training vid

Reminds me of Butterbean. There is no comparison between the two men. Galento was no fat man. His body was more in line with someone like Don Cockell. Muscle with a layer of fat. Butterbean, at his best, was still 290+ pounds. Overall he's been anywhere from 320-400 pounds. The major difference bet...

Re: Tony Galento training vid

Galento gets a lot of flack . .clearly not a great fighter by any means, but Tony was no joke when on. He had quick hands and one punch power in his left hook. Also was tough/durable and would keep coming with his awkward style, which was hard to time (unlike modern short heavyweights, he was smart...

Re: Joe Frazier v Sonny Liston

Liston takes Frazier. I can't imagine Frazier coming out of a corner Liston has driven him into.

Re: Rocky Marciano vs. Joe Frazier

I'd pick Marciano. I do not think the size difference would make a difference that his heart would not compensate for. The quality of fighters he fought was not as great as the quality of the men Frazier fought and he did struggle with slick boxers like Charles and Wolcott. However Frazier was not a...

Re: Gatti vs Hatton at Welterweight

this fight I like Hatton to win on points but I can remember how he fought against Manny Pacquiao, once he got caught he was gone and Gatti could really let them go and turn a boxing match into an all out brawl and as good as Hatton was I think he'd get drawn into a brawl with Gatti and that would ...

Re: Prime George Foreman vs. a prime Lennox Lewis?

It's a tough one, but I keep thinking about Lewis' punishing jab. His right hand was no cream puff either.Of course George had a lot going for him too. But I'm picking Lewis.

Re: Gatti vs Hatton at Welterweight

Hatton. Gatti had too many guts and too little defense. I loved to watch Gatti a much more exciting fighter than Hatton but I have to go with Hatton.

Re: Most Skillfull Fighter Of Alltime ?

I have three men in mind:

Sam langford

Henry Armstrong

and Ray Robinson.

But really it is difficult to pick there have been so many. Was Benny Leonard better than Roberto Duran at lightweight? As it is, choosing one does not diminish the other.
