Re: Does weight make someones chin better?
No, not at all. The only thing that makes your chin better is being accustomed to taking a punch. If you only spar with 135 lbrs then you are more than likely not going to take the punch of a 160 lb fighter very well. If you only spar with 160 lbrs then the power of a 135 lbr won't feel as bad as if...

Re: Prime James J. Jeffries Vs. Jack Johnson
According to Corbett it would have gone to a decision. Easy Trivia: Was it Dempsey-Tunney 1? Thank you for the Corbett answer - BoxRec has it listed as a 25 rounder - that put Corbett only six minutes from the regaining the title. Yes to Tunney-Dempsey I – here’s one a touch more difficult (if you ...

Re: Prime James J. Jeffries Vs. Jack Johnson
Jeff has hugely better results against common opposition to Johnson who wasn't relevant when Jeff was active. Jack Monroe - Jeffries did better Fitzsimmons - Johnson did better Joe Kennedy - Both knocked him out. Only a fool would think that just because it took Johnson 4 rds instead of 2 that he w...

Re: Prime James J. Jeffries Vs. Jack Johnson
It also applies to Corbett who was dominating Jeffries. Matter of fact contemporary accounts thought a younger Corbett would have knocked Jeffries out. Why would age matter when it comes to Jeffries but not to when fighting a teenager? You have strange logic. Why does weight of the opponent only ma...

Re: Prime James J. Jeffries Vs. Jack Johnson
That only applies to FItz, who was one of those fighters that aged well. Two years before he had wins over Ed Dunkhorst, Gus Ruhlin, and Tom Sharkey (all by early KO), and he'd go onto win the Light Heavyweight title over a year later. Of course while age matter a lot when it's Jeffries. It's irrel...

Ward-Kovalev I Rd 1: Ward 10-9 Rd 2: Kovalev 8-10 Rd 3: Kovalev 9-10 Rd 4: Kovalev 9-10 Rd 5: Kovalev 9-10 Rd 6: Ward 10-9 Up until this point Kovalev seems to be pretty much in control with Ward just trying to survive. In rd 6 Ward is coming back and Kovalev can't get anything started. Kovalev look...

Re: Prime James J. Jeffries Vs. Jack Johnson
The difference is Jeffries struggled to death with the best he faced (who were almost 40) whereas Johnson utterly dominated the guys he fought. That only applies to FItz, who was one of those fighters that aged well. Two years before he had wins over Ed Dunkhorst, Gus Ruhlin, and Tom Sharkey (all b...

Re: Prime James J. Jeffries Vs. Jack Johnson
Sam Mcvea - Had taken out Denver Ed Martin as a "teenager". Who is Denver Ed Martin and why should I care? Burns - Had beaten plenty of heavyweights and was the champion. As I recall Johnson didn't struggle with him. So how come this doesn't apply to Jeffries beating FItz? Fitz of course ...

Re: Klitschko training details
No wonder [Haye's] stamina sucks One of the few fights where Haye was 100% healthy was Dereck Chisora... He looked like he could keep that pace all night... If you really hate somebody you train under control and worry a lot about injuries and being 100%... Like Froch for Groves 2.. He was 37 but t...

Re: Prime James J. Jeffries Vs. Jack Johnson
Resume's weak?????? ... My goodness, Jeffries beat Bob Fitzsimmons twice, Jim Corbett twice, Tom Sharkey, Peter Jackson, Bob Armstrong, and Hank Griffin.. Not easy to do.. Although Johnson mastered Jeffries like he was a raw novice -- Jeffries was, in fact, a very accomplished Heavyweight Champion....

Re: Prime James J. Jeffries Vs. Jack Johnson
If a fighter beat a guy then he beat a guy. Regardless of which way it went with the newspapermen, the guys in the ring knew who won. Right... Frequently the guy who didn't get the decision won. You didn't use logic to arrive at that conclusion. At this point you are just over generalizing my state...

Re: Prime James J. Jeffries Vs. Jack Johnson
When did Johnson ever beat anyone like a peak Jeffries? Johnson's best win was Tommy Burns, who was little bigger than Fitz, signficantly shorter, and not nearly as highly regarded P4P. Johnson has wins over Mcvea, Burns, Jeanette, Langford, Frank Moran and James J Jeffries himself. Like I said, I ...

Re: Prime James J. Jeffries Vs. Jack Johnson
SO do opinions from the time count again? A single newspaperman doesn't decide the rankings. Beating someone is objective, you either did or didn't. That was basex on the overawll opinions of multiple newspapers, not one. Various ones gave it both ways, showing beating someone really isn't objectiv...

Re: Why is George Foreman so highly rated?
I suspect because he was big, hit hard, and had a decent chin when he wasn't gassed. Then again, he gassed by the 4th or 5th rd so that doesn't mean much. Any elite heavyweight who can last to the 4th or 5th rd against Foreman can probably beat him. Me personally, I'm not too high on Foreman. I thin...

Re: Prime James J. Jeffries Vs. Jack Johnson
Langford beat plenty of other heavyweights at around that weight. I doubt added weight on his frame would have done much good. Fair point about McVea and Jeannette. You can hardly argue using Fitz's weight, then dismiss Langford's much lower weight, especially when Fitz was much more established as...

Re: Prime Larry Holmes vs Prime George Foreman
Holmes was NOT Ali. He didn't have the quickness, reflexes, footwork, flow, chin, or durability of Ali. They weren't even alike. They primarily boxed behind a jab (Ali more often than Holmes). That's about the only similarity.
Holmes would not fair well in Zaire like Ali did.
Foreman knockout 4-5.

Re: Prime James J. Jeffries Vs. Jack Johnson
Langford was only 155 when Johnson beat him. Johnson wanted no part of him when he got bigger. McVea and Jeannette hadn't peaked when he fought them either, and Johnson's win over Jeffries was meaningless. Langford beat plenty of other heavyweights at around that weight. I doubt added weight on his...

Re: Prime James J. Jeffries Vs. Jack Johnson
Johnson dominated Jeffries their entire fight. I can't imagine it being much different. Imo Jeffries is overrated. He never fought anyone like Johnson and the guys he did fight were past prime. His best win is over a bleeding middleweight! Johnson by KO and proves to be his master every stage of the...
