The seven stand out World heavyweight champions

In the entire history of World heavyweight boxing there have been, in my opinion, seven champions that stand out from the rest in terms of dominance and ability. Their names would be known to the ‘man in the street’ who may have had little or no interest in the sport. They are not necessarily the be...

Re: Best Career Following a First Round Loss

Earnie Shavers springs to my mind. Stopped in one round by Jerry Quarry in 1973 then went on to box for the World heavyweight title twice and also demolish Ken Norton in one round. Ended up living in Liverpool!

Re: Tony Booth

I have the great honour of recommending each year the British Boxing Hall of Fame Centurions category. I had no hesitation in recommending Tony for the 2026 award, which he received earlier this month. A very good boxer was Tony.

Re: What are some surprising family ties between boxers?

Jack Matthews of Hanley was a top class feather and lightweight boxer in the UK before the First World War. His son was the all time great footballer, Sir Stanley Matthews. His grandson, and Sir Stanley’s son, was the 1962 Junior champion at the Wimbledon Lawn Tennis championships and, as a professi...

Re: Top 50 HW'S 1940-49.

Nice list Matt and well done. I am surprised that there is no place for Bruce Woodcock amongst the fifty. Whilst he was no great shakes, his knockout victories over Lesnevich and Oma plus his victory over Olek surely puts him ahead of Joe Muscato, for instance.

An extract from my piece which appeared in Boxing News on 17 April 2025. Harris Cashstein did not want to live an ordinary life. Not for him the factory, the dockyard or the uniform of a serving soldier. Harris wanted do things his own way, to make his own money and to be independent. As we would pu...

Re: Joe Calzaghe-British boxing's greatest ever ?

Its Wilde and the two Lewis' ahead for me, but a legitimate case for Joe to be #1. There are a band of others also - like Buchannan - who you could put ahead of Joe. I think Joe below top 5 might be on the harsh side. Definitely lower part of the 10 would be harsh. Where Hatton is ranked would also...

Error in Frank Moran record

Frank Moran, the great US heavyweight has a bout listed twice in his record.

It occurred on Jan 1 1912 and was against Fred Storbeck

Unfortunately it has also been duplicated on the exact date the following year, Jan 1 1913. This is the error and could it be removed please?
