Re: Which decade of heavyweight boxing was the best?

McVea, Langford, Jeffries, Jeff Clark, Frank Childs, Griffin, Klondike, Jeannette, Jack Johnson, Denver Ed Martin, Dempsey, Wills, Tom Sharkey. Kid McCoy to Kid Norfolk--plus Corbett, Slavin Goddard and Fitzsimmons still around to make it interesting. That era has the advantage of being 20 years on ...

Re: Vitali Klitschko Versus

I think Vitali ranks alongside the all-time greats and is a tough fight for anyone in history. His only downside is he is fighting now so it's easier to diminish him, like Lewis during his time. Lewis is top 5, Vitali is top 10 and rising

Re: Jack Johnson's legacy?

The greatest heavyweight of his time. Ranks equal to any heavyweight who ever lived based on his ability and accomplishments in his era. Head to head I have no idea. But his career has been one of the most interesting to me personally though.

Re: Rocky Marciano couldn't carry my jockstrap.........

Holmes lacked color/charisma. So he couldn't roll with comments like Ali. He expressed himself with the tools he had in the moment and agitated a lot of people against him. On top of that, he was being judged and criticized and didn't know how to handle it gracefully.

Re: style change in boxing around late twenties - yes or no.

To my eyes something is clearly different. The footage of Jack Johnson shows a much different and more crude-appearing sport than the modern game. Even compared to Dempsey. But Dempsey was a fighter of his time if you read the boxing writers of the time who saw him and other fighters fight. That's w...

The didn't wear just black or white prior to the 60s. Thats an unconscious illusion made because the film is almost all in black and white from that time back. They have worn costumes of all colors, always

Re: Bob Fitzsimmons book question.....

Jeffries wrote about Fitz in his biography too. I lean toward the writers of the time period to get more of a feel of the people. The further time passes the more that facts and figures and imagination are used to tell the story. Ruby Robert is short but also good

I'll never buy into cross-era debates ever again. Both sides make convincing cases. They are all great. It takes undefinable qualities for a man to rise to the top of his class in any era!

Another vote here for Jeff. If you include old timers, Gentleman Jackson won the title in his third fight and final fight.

Re: Joe Goddard

Very up and down performer with a huge punch. Sharkey Choynski and Jeffries said he hit them harder than anyone else in a ring. He fought black fighters when top whites were ducking them. Some call his 8 round draw with Jackson the start of the end for Jackson. He fought blacks through the turn of t...

If Jones beat Lewis he doesn't need any of those other names on his record. Think about it. If Jones beat Lewis would anyone be here saying, yeah but he just never faced Nigel Benn. He just never faced Dariusz Michalczewski.... lol Or any of the other opponents he did beat! Lewis is plenty fantastic...

Re: It's 1921...

If Dempsey could beat him that easily all he had to do was make the match. He didn't. The money was there. Wills obviously wanted it. Dempsey's side presented all the obstacles yet Wills made no demands. A fighter doing that today would be roundly criticised. I don't know who wins but a lot of those...

I second that Stan Ketchel nomination. His 30 round rematch with Thomas was acclaimed the greatest fight of all time. There are many boxers with great stories going all the way back to Broughton. But how about Paddy Ryan? A guy steps off a bar stool and wins the championship in his debut fight after...
