Willie Jones

Willie Jones has two listings, one under 625970, the other under 658818. I tried to change them, but both have been verified and locked.

Re: Muhammed Ali v Jack Dempsey

In Dempsey's book about boxing technique, he said that he weighed 180 for the Willard fight. He said they announced him at 187.

Re: Tony Tucker v Oliver Mccall

Probably the only time McCall was well trained for a fight was the first Lewis fight. One of McCall's management team said that if they could get one week of training out of McCall he could beat anyone, if they got two it was no contest. They KNEW he was going to beat Lewis. There was no question in...

Re: Question for anyone who lives in Dublin Ireland area

moorser, I looked up Conway's online. The place we were in wasn't like that. It was small, probably 15 feet wide in the bar area, a bar on one side, a counter, stools at the bar, a few tables, and a pool room in the back. On the wall across from the bar were cases with boxing gloves. Fitzgerald's po...

Re: Question for anyone who lives in Dublin Ireland area

I didn't see the guy in that video. He didn't say that he was still training boxers, but he did mention that he took an Irish team to Boston a few years ago. This pub has boxing gloves hanging on the walls inside and it has a boxing poster in the front window. We were walking away from the spire on ...

Re: World heavyweight champion behind the bar @ your local pub!

A lot of ex-champs are seen in worse places than their own bar. A lot of them are in jail, are drug addicts, heavy drinkers, etc. If Tommy Burns was tending bar in his own place, he was doing okay. Lots of ex-champs have done worse.

Re: Question for anyone who lives in Dublin Ireland area

Rocky, do you know the name of the place? Is it on Fitzgibbon like I thought? I see that Gerry "Monk" Hutch has a limo company. They were going to call a guy with cabs/limos to take us to Savior's boxing club. The guy who said he trained boxers for 30 years was probably 60 or more, about 5...

Re: Question for anyone who lives in Dublin Ireland area

Deno, I'm not sure what year the guy took a team to Boston, it seems that it might have been around 2005. Most of the guys at the pub had been drinking and were talking a lot. This pub was not a "tourist" type place, it was well off of O'Connell. One of the guys mentioned that Fitzgerald o...

Re: holyfield and steroids

Holyfield probably did use PEDs but probably ALL of his world class opponents did too. Who knows how far back that PEDs were used in boxing? Whoever found them first had a big advantage over his opponents who didn't know about them. Anything that cuts body fat, adds muscle, makes one recover faster,...

Question for anyone who lives in Dublin Ireland area

We were visiting Dublin last week, saw a small bar, maybe on Fitzgibbon, west of N. Circular Rd. I didn't get the name of the bar and I'm not even sure it was on Fitzgibbon. We had walked on O'Connell away from the river, turned right and walked that way to near the bridge. Coming back we saw a bar ...

14 miles of alternating sprinting and jogging for 100 yards each...then sparring, heavy bag for 20-25 minutes straight, 3 games of handball, medicine ball, etc. LOL, whoever wrote this has never trained or he/she would know that even one day of exercise like that would be too much to recover from, e...

Re: Sparring - do you wear a headguard?

It's best if at least one person sparring wears a headgear. If not, there is too much chance of a butt causing a cut. The person wearing the headgear has to give up some vision but getting cut is worse.

Re: Norton vs. Marciano...

[quote="Goodnight, Irene"]Norton clobbered Garcia at the second time of asking. I agree with those who say his ability to handle a puncher is under-rated. Garcia was on the downhill slide when he fought Norton the second time. He had lost 5 of his last 10 fights, and had been knocked out i...

Re: Which LHWs are the worst for Pascal?

You need to compare Pascal to hywts of the 15 round era or Cruiserweights. No way Pascal makes 175 on a same day weigh-in. Pascal's problem vs. Hopkins was bad footwork and technique. The guy is a physical freak of power, speed, and toughness. I thought Hopkins won the fight, but Pascal was dangerou...

Cosell was clueless about boxing and it showed everytime. One thing he did was when left handed boxers fought, he called right jabs, "lead right hands." Cosell was terrible.

Re: Jess Willard under-rated?

Ezzard, Berbick, Bruno, Tubbs, Coetzee, Weaver were all good fighters who would be legends today if they came along with their skills in the time of Jess Willard. Willard looks like a low level Toughman competitor/novice amateur in all of the video I've seen. VK has boxed since he was young. Just be...

Re: How great was the punch that Foreman knocked Moorer out

It looked like a great punch to me too. Foreman "blinded" Moorer with the jab, then hit him on the chin with a right he didn't see coming. That one would have been tough for anyone to deal with.

Brutu, I was told by a person who stayed at the motel that Joe Dominic works at the Sheraton in Spartanburg, S.C. This was about a year ago. You could call the hotel to find out if he is still there. The person who talked to him said he is alert and has a good memory.

Re: Top 5 p4p of the modern day?

Slurred speech doesn't always mean a fighter got hit a lot. Many of the boxers that are considered "punchy" are boxers who didn't take care of themselves between fights and after they were finished with boxing. George Chuvalo speaks well, while many fighters who abused drugs and alcohol an...

Re: YOUR score for the Ali-Norton fights.

I agree with Ray that Norton won all 3 fights with Ali, but all that means is that Norton knew how to beat Ali. Ali was more adaptable and versatile than Norton and could beat boxers that Norton couldn't beat. A friend who is a wrestling coach told me that in college wrestling it is not uncommon to ...

Re: Top Ten HW contenders who never got a title shot.

"Florida" Al Jones is another guy with a good record and a few good wins who never got a shot. Seems like I read that he had brittle hands that held him back. Plus, he was 6'6" and left handed at a time when it was rare to see a southpaw hywt. Even if a fighter beat him it would be ha...
