Re: Ratings - please read before commenting

Is there a way to see a boxer's ranking at the time of a certain bout? When I click on 'bout' it shows their current ranking. For example, Canelo is ranked #1 even for his pro debut.

My father fought on several cards with Heair. I'll ask him if he has any memories he can share.

1. I just want to see a great fight, regardless of the result.

2. My preferred result is Wilder by KO.

I'm a pretty big fan of journeymen like this. More so than champions and contenders. Guys like Bruce Strauss, Donnie Pendelton, Reggie Strickland, James Holly, Charles Atlas, etc.
I have respect for these guys too, but I wouldn't put Bruce Strauss in that company.

A sub-forum would be great. These what-if posts have gotten out-of-hand. I think lots of good topics are getting buried.

Re: Boxing's Fat Guys

Tony Gardner did have a reputation as a hard puncher though, especially for a junior middleweight. I'm not surprised he could put McBride down. Pretty much any "real" boxer could take him out.

Re: Boxing's Fat Guys

That's awesome. I'm friends with Jerry Halstead and he told me some pretty good stories about the O'Grady's and guys like Monte Masters. I'll be waiting for those stories your dad has. :TU: My dad has a few more comments after looking at McBride’s record. People basically came to his fights expecti...

Re: Boxing's Fat Guys

Oklahoma truly was the Wild West of boxing at one point. Alotta "open-weight" bouts, and many fights off the record. The O'Grady family was Oklahoma boxing for many, many years. It's difficult to imagine today a single family running a monopoly over a whole sport in a state, but it was qu...

Re: Boxing's Fat Guys

:TU: That's great thank you! I still plan on having my dad take a look at his record later this week, but I will add this about McBride: His three-time opponent Pete Knight was a light-heavyweight who weighed in at 168 for one of their fights; Don Masterson was primarily a middleweight or a similar...

Re: More Duplicate Boxers/Aliases

And one other thing - lots of those Oklahoma fights still haven't been recorded. For example, the 1980-11-15 event in Miami currently only lists Tony McMinn vs. Eddie Johnson, but Jimmy Heair was the headliner and Johnny Copeland fought a 10 round fight as well. The newspaper reporting the results d...

Re: More Duplicate Boxers/Aliases

Oklahoma in those days is a bit of a challenge, to put it mildly. And as for Oklahoma being a challenge, my dad said he knew several guys from that area who would take "unofficial" fights when they needed extra money using aliases so a potential loss wouldn't go on their official record t...

Re: More Duplicate Boxers/Aliases

Thanks for the info. Oklahoma in those days is a bit of a challenge, to put it mildly. Regarding the Eddie Mitchell / Billy Thomas identity, do you have any additonnal proof? You refer to the 5-38 record Mitchell had at the time according to Boxrec, but that record is almost certainly incomplete an...

I wish that there was footage of the guy  unfortunately I've never came across any. That'd of been interesting to have seen this guy in action. It has to be noted McBride & Mathis, another "fat guy" in boxing history, duked it out for the Super Heavyweight title in 1972. McBride ...

Golovkin example: Golovkin won no regular points, Rolls lost no regular points. Golovkin only got addtitonal points. 0.01 for the win. 0.1 for the win against a winner within 18 months. 1 for a win against a winner, who himself defeated a winner within 18 months. And finally up to 40 points, at mos...

Re: Zab Judah probably not in a coma

There are some who would let him fight in his 80s No doubt about it, the commissions are corrupt enough to let just about anyone with a pulse fight. That's why I'm wondering if Zab was broke. There's no other reason for him to take the fight other than ego (which of course is a strong possibility).

The latest rumour is that this weekend’s fight between Tom Schwarz and Tyson Fury could be for the vacant WBO title, which is rumoured to be stripped imminently from Andy Ruiz Jr. Both fighters would have jumped ahead of Dillian Whyte in the WBO’s title-shot queue. It seems unfair to think that And...

I like Fury, but as soon as he starts showboating I'm going to start rooting for Schwarz. Nothing annoys me more than a boxer clowning an overmatched opponent.

At least they didn't rank AJ #1 and drop Whyte down to #2. Whyte would lose his mind knowing that his already delayed title shot is even farther away.

Re: Zab Judah probably not in a coma

Glad to hear he's recovering.

Was Zab broke or was he just trying to recapture his glory days? If the latter, this is a perfect example of why these older guys need to just let the past go and call it a day. This sport is too dangerous to be competing with diminished skills.

Re: Ratings - please read before commenting

A UD is not a clear decision per definition. It only means, all judges gave the win to one of the opponents. And this may be by an advantage of one single round. So such a bout is much closer to a draw. A SD with 2 judges favouring cleary one opponent and the 3rd judge only having it close may be a...

Re: Ratings - please read before commenting

But he's still #1 by a wide margin.. This is my point though. Canelo had 1129 more points than Jacobs and loses 92 points when he wins a UD. Golovkin had 1363 more points than Steve Rolls but gains points for KOing him. Why should he gain points for KOing such an overmatched opponent? That is an in...

Re: Ratings - please read before commenting

If Saul Alvarez squeeked a narrow 12 round UD over Clifford McPherson http://boxrec.com/en/boxer/327502 should he still be rated at #1 ? No, but McPherson is rated 1,284. Alvarez would be expected to shutout or KO him. Jacobs is #3 and a close decision would be expected. I'm just wondering why a UD...
