Re: How many times did Duane Bobick fight Ron Lyle in the amateurs?
Howard 'Kayo' Smith In 1968, Howard was the Fifth Army Heavyweight Champion and was stationed in Fort Carson, Colorado. The Army Boxing Team visited the Canon City, Colorado Prison to face their Boxing Team. Howard {Age; 21} was pitted against the 'vicious punching' Ron Lyle, who was a 27 year-old h...

Re: How many times did Duane Bobick fight Ron Lyle in the amateurs?
I think the problem with the result may come from the January 17, 1971 Colorado Springs Gazette-Telegraph. In the body of the story it states that Lyle knocked out Bobick and that all the rest of the fights ended up going to decisions. In the agate results of all the fights, it just says XXX defeate...

Re: The Muhammad Ali Exhibitions Thread
does anyone happen to know when in 1984 the Porter exhibition may have occurred???
And it now sounds as if the Lyle event should indeed be classified as an exhibition.

Re: The Muhammad Ali Exhibitions Thread
1. I'm not convinced the Lyle video was for an exhibition...seemed more like a planned sparring session (with Ali training for the Frazier fight); 2. I believe that is from the July 16th exhibition in Newcastle...I think the July 28th date is a typo someone made previously but just trying to make su...

Re: 1980 Olympic Team
The tournament is run by the affiliated body, in this case (in 1980) AIBA, chosen by the IOC to oversee the individual disciplines...the IOC oversees the running of the entire Games but not the individual events. The officials would have been chosen by AIBA, and to say that the officials would have ...

Re: Charles 'Doc' Broadus pro record?
The only results I have for him all took place in the Golden Buckle negro tournament held at Memorial Stadium in Greensboro, North Carolina: May 13, 1938 - Robert Withers - TKO May 17, 1938 - Harold Cotton - L (semifinals in welterweight division) May 25, 1939 - Wesley Austin - W default May 26, 193...

Charles Broadus was fighting as an amateur as late as December 1939 in the Negro Golden Gloves in Greensboro...no record of any pro fights in the area though.

Re: Igor Vysotsky
My apologies...I had just answered the question about the 1980 US Olympic team and didn't pay enough attention to the year. I agree with the fact that in 1976 Vysotsky would have had a better than even chance against Teo based on those recent results; at that time Igor seemed to have Teo's number an...

Re: Igor Vysotsky
i don't think so, not in 1980. Teo was in the middle of his prime, and Vysotsky was at the tail end of his career. Igor might have been emboldened by previous results, but by 1980 I think Teo was bigger and smarter than previously and would have handled the Russian.

Re: 1980 Olympic Team
With Olympic boxing at the time it would have depended on two things - the draw, and fair scoring. There was virtually no chance the U.S. would have been given a fair deal in the Soviet Union when it came to the scoring, and it would have been very interesting to see how the draw would have come out...

I researched the base newspapers from that time and that is where the results from Fort Lewis came from...I will see if I can find it again, but they had Marciano beating Collier in one of the weekly base bouts.

They are also living with their son Elmer Jr. (li...

Kid Kaplan had always said that he had a number of pro fights under the name of Benny Miller. An early article stated that he and a friend had moved to New York for a year and he had the four fights listed on his present record as occurring in Jersey City. Furthermore, he also said that he had fough...
