Re: Wilfredo Gomez v Rocky Lockridge

The decision was rigged. Just before the fight- Gregorio Benitez was quoted in the NY Daily News saying that Rocky had to stop him before 7 to win. He said if the fight lasted past 7- it was a definite Gomez win. Sure enough in round 7, Rocky staggers Gomez and backs off the rest of the fight.

Harry Jeffra was a double champion---bantamweight and featherweight Pete Latzo won the welterweight title from Mickey Walker and later fought Tommy Loughran for the lightheavyweight title. Fidel LaBarba was a great fighter--film of him beating Kid Chocolate Tony DeMarco was a great left hooker Latz...

Bob Sheridan!? This guy is flat-out spectacular at generating excitement in the call. I'm surprised he's not getting any appreciation here, quite the opposite. Just look at the way Lampley handles Tyson's stunning fall from grace against Douglas... Lampley: [flat] "What an uppercut by Douglas,...

You all should know that Phil. Jack once admitted that "all" of his fights were fake.
He confessed to a San Francisco paper in 1907.
Joe Walcott and Bob Fitz were quoted that they agreed to carry Jack and not punch in the clinches.

I too feel it was the 1970's
I remember as far back as when Rocky Marciano retired

Funny thing about the 1970's - during that time people were complaining that it was dead!

Aside from ALi Frazier Duran and maybe Napoles- casual fans in the USA were not feeling many of the fighters.

I don't know what you would consider proof- but it's an accurate statement. The winner of many of his fights were expected to challenge Robinson. Most of the write ups would mention that the winner would get a title shot- it was the case for his fights with janiro, graham, fusari, gavilan, and taylo...

Even though Chuvalo was a bottom of the pack contender- he is still miles ahead of Austin. I expected Austin to do better than he showed- I expected him to smother Wlad and make it uncomfortable for him- well we know what happened. BTW- Looking at that Foreman-Chuvalo clip- I can see Rocky Marciano ...

Jones would have to stay off the ropes- i think Cerdan was better in close and i can see him smothering and outworking Jones if its fought in close

it jones can keep marcel off him- i think he wins clearly

those claims are not true- they appeared in Peter Heller's book but even Heller himself states that there is no truth to those statements. JOrdan was senile when the interview was conducted. He spent most of his later days rambling about anything. He was not from the Dom. Rep. did not speak spanish ...
