Re: The turbulent career of John P Clow.
Part 2. 1886 brought a peak Cloy, with a series of draws in which he generally outperformed good opponents: Jim Fell, Duncan McDonald (twice), and Dave Campbell. He finished the year by fighting as the resident house fighter in the two top clubs in Philadelphia, Clarke's for one week, and then the C...

I have a copy of "The Sundowners" the history of the Black Prizefighter 1870-1930 Volume 11, part one. Over 650 large format pages, magnificent, published by CCK Publications and Kevin Smith.

Eureka!Bob came up trumps with the elusive Dalton-Clow drawn encounter. The above record now modified and a few other additions of exhibitions added too.

The turbulent career of John P Clow.
Frank C Marshall stepped through the batwings of Murphy’s Exchange saloon and fired two shots at John P Clow, before the fighter could get his gun into action, one going through his brain, causing his demise. Apparently, it was an argument over a horse that the ex-prize-fighter John P Clow bought fr...

Re: Revised John P Clow record.
No problem at all. They are specialists in that field and have four sources; I've never seen them to be wrong. The 1880 census has John at 17 years old, so he was getting younger all the time! I had him in my records for February 24 1892 also. I think we will have a pretty good bio and record for hi...

Re: Revised John P Clow record.
great information, thanks!
Any press report on the Dalton fight?
His birthday is definitely February 9th 1861 at Meadville, Crawford, Pennsylvania, thanks to Gregory Speciale and John Barbella. Father Alex and mother Sarah Boyd. Their residence was in Erie at that time.

I don't mean to demean a big undertaking but a system that has a Jeffries win over Peter Jackson as in any way meaningful, needs tweaking.

Re: Top 50 HW'S 1940-49.
Nice list Matt and well done. I am surprised that there is no place for Bruce Woodcock amongst the fifty. Whilst he was no great shakes, his knockout victories over Lesnevich and Oma plus his victory over Olek surely puts him ahead of Joe Muscato, for instance. Miles Templeton Savold, too, I don't ...

Re: Top 50 HW'S 1940-49.
Very valid post, I think all three are very close and I'm torn about taking up your suggestion, I was actually surprised at the lack of depth on Ray's ledger, Savold(who everybody beat) and Walker and wins and losses to Lovett and Reddish. Loss to Thompson and then winding down defeats by Riviera an...

Re: Were Quarry, Bonavena and Shavers better than Folley, Machen and Williams?
Here are the two decades, 50's and 60's, I'm not sure there were that many differences. BTW the ratings for the decades are strictly for fights only in that time space; Marciano Ali Liston liston Charles Frazier Walcott Patterson Johansson Ellis Patterson Quarry Moore Terrell Machen Folley H.Johnson...

Nov 5 1895 Armstrong v Slavin.
Boxrec tends to ignore any corrections I suggest for older records, and there are many inaccuracies, naturally, but the November 5 1895, win for Bob Armstrong over Frank Slavin never happened. Bob had a long reach, but Slavin was on the other side of the World, in London at the time. This affects th...

Were Quarry, Bonavena and Shavers better than Folley, Machen and Williams?
A lot of 50/60 HWs did ok against 60/70 contenders, think also Liston, Terrell, Cooper(?) Harold Johnson and Moore, how do you think they stack up? Of course, one group is starting to slide while the other side is green, but to me it suggests that at their best they are pretty even, thoughts?

Yeah, you are spot on about the waves at either end of a decade, 1910's and the '50's were the worst, Liston, Patterson, Folley and Machen were so different from Marciano, Charles, Walcott in terms of opponents etc, thank god for Archie Moore!

Re: Philadelphia Jack O'Brien- fake fights
There are multiple sources in May 1907 after the failed frame-up with Burns, The Oakland Tribune, May 22nd, 1907, page 14 is an example. He cites fights with Fitz, Peter Jackson, Berger, Joe Walcott and the report also mentions McCoy, Maher, Carter, Jack Sullivan, Schreck.
