A lot has changed in 30 years. Online, different viewing methods, subscriptions, illegal streams etc..mickey1975 wrote: ↑04 May 2018, 10:29 Really bad figures. Duff and Wazza were doing 10m 30 years ago!
Re: 2018 TV Ratings
With four channels. Now you have so much more choice.mickey1975 wrote: ↑04 May 2018, 10:29 Really bad figures. Duff and Wazza were doing 10m 30 years ago!
Viewing figures are useful to an extent in terms of direct comparison between channels but it's not really an indication of how many people actually watched a fight. How many people now have the ability to record a fight on a Saturday night when they're out, or watch a replay, or watch a stream? Absolutely loads.
Still not sure why BT seem to consistently pick up fewer viewers than Sky despite being in more homes. Saunders figures in particular are pathetic.
Re: 2018 TV Ratings
I’d imagine the BT Sports figures do not include allegedly viewers, and also Saunders Lemieux was on at 4am don’t forget.dirk2686 wrote: ↑05 May 2018, 02:11With four channels. Re: 2018 TV Ratings
Even without the BN figures the suggestion at the top of the first post states Sky have 9m subscribers to BT's 11m.MattCoke wrote: ↑05 May 2018, 03:52I’d imagine the BT Sports figures do not include allegedly viewers, and also Saunders Lemieux was on at 4am don’t forget.dirk2686 wrote: ↑05 May 2018, 02:11With four channels. In that sense it seems strange that Saunders in a world title fight against Munroe did less than Buglioni Summers on a channel with fewer subscribers. Unless of course we accept that Saunders is just largely unpopular.
Re: 2018 TV Ratings
Thanks for posting, interesting to read and love to see how this moves forward. Few commonsense conclusions can be drawn -
- Free to air shows get the biggest numbers still so remains the best platform for getting the name out there (Ch5, Dave and ITV4 pulling high numbers, even on average / less than average shows).
- Then Sky pulling in better numbers but BT closely the gap at the back end of last year.
- A bad match-up well promoted gets better numbers than a good fight badly promoted (unless on free to air).
Re: 2018 TV Ratings
Big Mick has just tweeted last night the channel 5 audience peaked at 1.5m

Re: 2018 TV Ratings
New entry
* ULTIMATE BOXXER - avg: 133,000 (27th April on 5 Spike)
It was 8th most watched on the channel for week ending 29 Apr 2018
5 Spike had an average daily reach of 1,093,000 at 1.82% share of audience for that week.
Compare that to Channel 5, which had a daily reach of 7,462,000 that week at 12.40% share of audience.
Would have done better numbers obviously on Channel 5, but still. Decent figures.
I take it Unilad on Facebook helped build up most of that audience too.

Re: 2018 TV Ratings
Really interesting thanks. How accurate are these though? Could they be inflated, does a viewing figure mean somebody watched the majority of the card or does flicking through channels count as a view?
I can't believe Joe Joyce fighting on Dave got nearly half a million views when you compare to some of the other cards. Crazy

Re: 2018 TV Ratings
30 years ago there were only 4 channels so easier for us to catch the fight, there was no internet and papers had big fights plastered over the back 2 or 3 pages not like these daysJimJim2009 wrote: ↑13 May 2018, 13:45Shades of what duff and wazza were doing 30 years ago

Re: 2018 TV Ratings
Need to remember most people on here are avid boxing fans. The numbers for Khan fight when you consider Frampton was on at same time tells u all u need to know about boxing viiewing figures. If I was a TV exec I wouldn’t be basing my decisions on the likes of us.
I’m surprised BT outstrips Sky for subscribers...one thing repeats itself so many times in business...marketing works. Sky and Matchroom are very good at it and even if they have an inferior product (at times) it still sells better than its competition. Be interested how Mick’s 1.5m compares with other sports C5 show. 1.5 sounds massive for a contest between 2 fighters most “casuals” won’t have seen before.....

I think Mick said the Fury-Sextion fight peaked at 1.5 million. I will keep an eye out myself for the figures.
Re: 2018 TV Ratings
An people are saying Mick should pack it in. If he's still got channel 5 and beating the competition on viewing figures why should he
Re: 2018 TV Ratings
If boxing is near the top of the EPG listings, terrestrial for example, it gets decent figures.
Khan is still a draw.
Fighters should be built on free TV, even terrestrial. A deal with a channel to showcase prospects even unto Euro level before the big PPV on the paystation. They'd get the moms and nans on the wagon then.

New Entry
* Hughie Fury vs. Sam Sexton - peak: 2.9 million (12th May on 5Spike/Channel 5)
Hughie Fury vs. Sam Sexton Generates Big Rating
The whole broadcast over 5Spike and Channel 5 reached 2.9 million!! Excellent news.
I take it the 2.9m is a peak figure, which would have been the Main Event.

I’m assuming the 2.9m is people who have watched, for a few minutes or more, either show.

It doesn’t say that anywhere. It says 2.9m tuned in to watch on the night. For all we know they may be summing the unique viewers on each channel.Ruthless-RKO wrote: ↑15 May 2018, 15:34It means it reached 2.9m at some point in the broadcast. To put it in to context the most watched show on ch5 in the W/e May 6th was just over 1.7m (average not peak). I’d love to believe they did 3m though!
Re: 2018 TV Ratings
1.5mil or 2.9mil either way they are great numbers, they would have been even better if fat Mick was any good, the show went live at 9pm, Hughie Fury should have been on about 9.10/9.15.
