Old Tommy Ryan vs Hugo Kelly?

37 year old Tommy Ryan fights Hugo Kelly to a draw:

He is the slightly shorter of the two and fights out of the right corner I think.

Thanks to RareBoxing for the upload. :TU:

Can't believe I saw that.

Never thought I'd see Tommy Ryan, even at this very old stage, long after he had really stopped fighting seriously

Kelly, the taller, is obviously very intimidated by fighting Ryan even though Ryan lost his middleweight title in 1896 to Kid McCoy, eleven years earlier, then claimed the title again but certainly hadn't been considered a really active fighter for years.

Tommy Ryan had been known as the retired champion who trained Jim Jeffries from a novice into his heavyweight champiionship form.

And at the time this fight took place, Jeffries was already retired.

Kelly does nothing except run away or clinch. No way he deserved a draw.

Ryan is the aggressor and throws a number of heavy right hands. But its hard to do anything with an opponent who won't fight.

At one point Kelly changes from running away to flying in forward to clinch.

At one point Ryan can be seen stopped to exhort Kelly to stop running away and to stand and fight.

Kelly had an odd stance, leaning away in a manner similar to the stance Georges Carpentier used against Frank Klaus in a fight early in Carpentier's career.

Thanks a million for calling attention to this, A, and to RareBoxing for posting it.

What a great find! Sadly, Tommy Ryan is largely forgotten today. He won two championships - welterweight and middleweight - and never lost either title in the ring. (His loss to Kid McCoy in 1896 was a non-title over-the-weight fight when Ryan was welterweight champion.)

As I recall, this fight was one of those in which the participants agreed to a draw if the fight went the distance.

What a treat to see!

I'm not entirely convinced about the authenticity of this film now. I've heard that this could actually be the Carpentier-Klaus fight which was also uploaded by RareBoxing. In that case I'll have to apologize for posting the wrong footage.

You are right.

Note what I posted earlier about the similarity to the Carpentier boxing stance in his fight with Frank Klaus.

Hugo Kelly was more powerfully built than the taller fighter in this film.

That's a great picture of Hugo Kelly KO'd by Papke and the referee counting. Ryan may have been 37 but he was still able to compete with a middleweight title claimant in Kelly. Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be any actual film of the fight. However I've heard that a Jim Jeffries-Tommy Ryan sparring session from 1899 exists. I'll have to look for that now.

How brilliantly ironic that self-proclaimed boxing expert granberry fails to recognise well known boxer George Carpentier

I know you've got some kind of a rivalry going on, which I don't care to get involved with, but he did note that one of the fighters on the film had a style similar to what Frank Klaus used against Georges Carpentier, which this fight actually was. Due to the very poor quality of the film and it being falsely advertised as the Ryan-Kelly fight, a mistake is understandable.

If only that clown could talk to people like you do, mate, we might actually cut him some slack.

As it is, I find it hilarious that the fraud has been hoist by his own petard.

collins, the pestilence of boxrec, arrives to trash another thread with his completely off topic posts.

collins is the severely retarded nephew of the owner of boxrec, who allows collins to turn boxrec into his own personal toilet.

collins is so incompetent that he can't see I wrote that the taller fighter had a boxing stance [collins wouldn't know what that is] that looked like the stance Carpentier used in his fight with Frank Klaus.

collins drove referee Alan Sugar and fighter Shannon Briggs away from boxrec by trashing their threads with his homosexual posts.

Everyone here remembers when homosexually fixated sicko collins ran to the moderators to complain when I posted a comic book cover that featured the faces of four greats of Mexican boxing--Kid Azteca, Juan Zurita, Joe Conde, and Baby Casanova.

Image

collins wanted the posted deleted because he thought it had nothing to do with boxing.

WHY?

Because collins never heard of Kid Azteca, Juan Zurita, Joe Conde, and Baby Casanova.

collins didn't know who they were..

Francis, don't worry, no one is surprised you failed to notice well known boxer Georges Carpentier.

It's a mistake any novice could make.

Why not be a man and own up to not having any idea what well known boxer George Carpentier looks like?

LOL

GreatA,

How do you like having your thread trashed by boxrec sicko collins?

collins cruises boxrec looking for threads to trash.

collins has never made a post on the subject of boxing--and he never will.

Francis, stop crying.

You don't mind pointing out other people's mistakes and chortling into you beer.

Now the boot is on the other foot, it's suddenly "filth" to laugh at you?

LOL

PS You were only a generation out. Any novice could make that mistake.

A,

How do you like sicko collins turning your thread into a toilet?

boxrec is collins' personal toilet with full approval of the boxrec 'moderators.'

What a sick site this is.
