Probellum has announced the promotional signing of Scotland’s only ever three-weight world champion Ricky Burns.

Burns (43-8-1, 16 knockouts) held world titles at super-featherweight, lightweight and super-lightweight between 2010 and 2017.

During that time, the Scottish hero earned wins over fighters such as Michael Katsidis, Kiryl Relikh, Roman Martinez and Kevin Mitchell, whilst also sharing the ring with the likes of Terence Crawford and Ray Beltran.

“We are ecstatic to announce the promotional signing of three-weight world champion Ricky Burns,” said Richard Schaefer, President of Probellum. “Ricky is one of the best fighters of this generation, and there are still some huge nights ahead of him.

“Scottish boxing is at an all-time high at the moment with fighters such as Josh Taylor, Lee McGregor and Kash Farooq flying the flag, but Ricky remains a national hero. He hasn’t had the chance to fight in Scotland since 2017, and there are going to be endless possibilities for him after joining us here at Probellum.”

To this day, Burns remains one of the best Scottish fighters ever produced, having competed on 52 occasions in his illustrious professional career, with 13 of those being world title bouts.

He is the latest fighter to team up with Probellum, after former world champions Regis Prograis and Badou Jack joined earlier this week.

“I’m honoured to be signing this promotional agreement with Probellum,” said Burns. “I feel I’ve still got plenty left to offer in my career and I can’t wait to make my long-awaited return in the near future, hopefully with thousands of my fans in attendance.

“From my conversations with Probellum it’s clear that we share the same vision and goals, so I’m looking forward to stepping back into the ring soon and having a powerhouse like them backing me.”

They’ve signed some deal with some Latvian company/promotion, and also they’ve signed a deal with Wasserman.

Probellum is a Promotional and Media company.

I'd like to see Burns pack it in. Hes such a nice guy, I'd like him to leave in tact.

I remember Burns stopping a shot Gomez feels like 100 years ago.

Ricky is a nice guy and shouldn't be fighting anymore,what on earth is expecting to gain from this

What exactly do Probellum think these signings are going to do for them? Neither is on the up. Both well past prime. Is it just a name on the books people recognise?
Or maybe a name to be captured by some of their new, younger talent?
It doesn't make any sense.

The Burns signing is a strange one. A 38 year old who hasn’t fought in 2 years. I don’t think any of us would particularly want to see Ricky take many more punches and I can’t imagine he’s going to be selling out arenas.

If he wants to fight then I’m surprised he didn’t look to get a decent undercard slot on the Josh Taylor show or on Matchroom’s McGregor/Farooq show.

Are Probellum really going to put on a show in the U.K? I doubt it so they’ll work with Wasserman (who they’ve said they’ll work with) who work with Boxxer. That’s potentially a lot of people taking a share of money.

I don’t quite understand the business model Probellum are looking for. They’re looking to have fights all over the world but unless they’ve got a DAZN or ESPN + behind them then I’m not sure how they’ll get the shows watched by many people. If they’re planning to just work with other promoters with TV deals then why wouldn’t the boxers just work with the other promoters to get around Probellum’s % cut?

Not like he’s going to surprise anyone ever again, like he did during his great run, from the great fight with Martinez through to the big KO of Mitchell. It was good that ppl believed in Burns. But, This was 8 or 9 years ago.

The superb battle with Crolla, which he barely lost, appeared to be the last stand. But his grip at the top was tenuous - recall a thrilling fight with Reilekh, which Burns barely won.

What level does he plan to fight at?

FS I was afraid of this. Ricky lives and breathes boxing but his day is long past, I had hoped with him not fighting for two years he had finally decided to pack the game in. Hes going to be one of those guys who just cannot let it go because he doesn't know what to do without boxing.

It put me off Warren quite a bit. It’s astute in looking after his own money but it’s also part of the reason they have the Muhammed Ali act in the US whereby a promoter can’t also act as manager. It’s a big conflict of interest.

He’s taken a few beatings for sure! Almost every fight he’s in he takes damage.

very correct! im fully aware of that rule, more so recently, its never good to see a promoter 'ACT' as your manager, because they wont (from what ive seen) have your best interests at heart, and usually try and screw you over.

warren is very astute, which is why he has been a big promoter for a long time.

Cyclone is the promoter, then Barry was the manager, or was it a separate company (the same really)..
