Joe Gans said Maher was the best right hand puncher he saw.
Jack Johnson said the same.

What things ARE the same? (consistent)donnellon wrote:One fight only, minute and a bit, unlikely to take off the vest as it was cold and heading for rain and the action was very hectic. Bit of a mystery. There is another picture from the fight which shows Siler with no vest but...maybe he has...something in his right hand!
Damn I dont know how to post that photo.
Donnellon, donnellon wrote:Ref and boxers look same as in your first photo, both in dress and looks.
The crowd looks similar eg the guy with the towel is the same.
See the link below for more detailed arguement on the photo.

Every daily newspaper relies on wire reports. Wire reports are not invariably inaccurate.donnellon wrote:Granberry, it looks like Siler, could be Maher(should he look bigger?) and IMO looks like Fitz.
The link in the earlier post above deals with the counter claim as regards the ring surround, etc and I felt for a long time that the picture was not of the Maher-Fitz fight.
However, like Granberry i have come to suspect that some of the eye-witness reporters never set foot at the fight. Less than 200 were at ringside and while I have read many reports of the fight, all were by outside newspapers. There wasn't many local papers in that neck of the desert!
The fighters and referee look authentic but the questions remain like the one about the enclosure etc. One thing I read from a contempory source is that there was a photographer at the fight other than the Kinescope people.
