Ivailo Marinov, Bulgarian Amateur Star

Post by williefromrichmond »

ISMAIL MUSTAFOV/IVAILO MARINOV

Born July 12, 1960, Varna, Bulgaria

Orthodox stance

Boxed under his birth name, Ismail Mustafov, through 1984, when he was forced by Bulgaria’s communist regime to change his name to Ivailo Marinov, which he boxed under thereafter.

Fourteen-time Bulgarian national champion, 1978-1983, 1985-1989, 1991-1993. Did not participate in 1984 championships and lost in the finals of the 1990 championships because of illness.

Four-time European champion, 1981, 1983, 1989, 1991. European finalist, 1985.

Olympic champion, 1988. Olympic semifinalist, 1980.

World champion, 1982.

World Cup champion, 1981.

AIBA World Challenge champion, 1989. AIBA World Challenge finalist, 1983.

Nine-time Strandjata Cup champion, 1980-1981, 1983-1988, 1992.

Amateur record (career): 280-16. Five of the sixteen defeats were from walkovers caused by his problems with the Bulgarian government which resulted in him missing several big championships.

“Ivailo Marinov (Ismail Mustafov) was known for his extremely fast footwork. Footwork is one of the features in boxing which remains neglected by non-boxers. It does not give direct results, like uppercuts, but it allows [a boxer] to maintain comfortable distance. Ivailo Marinov was a master in this area. He would create problems [for] his opponents in a way that they would not be able to reach him because of his evasive movements. Asked in an interview whether being punched [in] the ring hurt, he responded humorously that he had been punched once and had been hurt so bad that he would not let [himself] be punched again.

“Marinov was picked as Bulgaria’s No. 1 boxer of the 20th century in a survey conducted by the Bulgarian Association of Boxing Journalists.”
