Draw will be 8/8, one day before the beginning of the competition. Doubtful you will be able to see it, don't expect even a live internet result. However, I am impressed with some of the AIBA's communications improvements, so maybe we'll get something this time.

Official Draw of the Boxers for the Games of the XXIX Olympiad in Beijing 25.07.2008
AIBA has the pleasure to announce today that the Official Draw of the Boxers for the Games of the XXIX Olympiad in Beijing will be done with a manual draw system. This decision has been made in order to provide an exiting and thrilled demonstration of boxers' bouts in each weight category.

The Official Draw Ceremony will be conducted from 11:00 until 13:00 on August 8, 2008 in the Grand Ballroom of Asia Hotel in Beijing.

AIBA Advisory Council members, 12 IOC members, will conduct this draw with the support of both BOCOG and AIBA HQs Office. The results of the draw will be followed by global media/press and transmitted to all stakeholders in the International Sports Community.

Heh heh. So they aren't gonna use the computerized draw system on the "new" AIBA electronic scoring system. Rather muck around with ping pong balls and take forever. :box:

I am wondering if there will be a draw for the judges or it will work as it was before - by some members of R/J commision :)))
I expect that Russia and former URSS countries will have some problems with judging. Bulgaria will not have referee for the Olympic tournament for the first time in many many years...

From what I understand - one of the big pluses for the "new" ESS is the judges and refs draw system. I suspect they will use it. We used it at the U.S. Championships this year and it actually does a good job.

Russia always has a problem - with judging fairly. :box:

Yeah, but they also have the best amateur system in the world; so I don't know if that's a moot point or not. Besides; I remember at cadet worlds a few years back Michael Hunter came from behind to beat the Russian representative. And from what I remember Todd Foster beat the Soviet boxer at his weight in Moscow.

Well, the 1984 LA Olympics or the 1999 Worlds in Houston weren't exactly an example of fair judging :D

Maybe JMac can shed some light on how the judges will be assigned - and how close to their assignments will they be told?

They do the draw of R/J's near ringside but I am not sure what system they use to do it. The officials are told one bout before what bout they are working to prevent what I guess would be somebody trying to bribe you.

Depending on the logistics of the venue, I may be able to provide a few results live or a short time after the end of the bout(s).

We can already pretty much predict that certain people are going to be drawn on opposite sides anyway.

So you are predicting that it WON'T be a blind draw????? And how do you figure AIBA will fix that?

The draw is in about two hours. From what I understand, Gavin of UK is out, what a shame. Having problems blogging - it's a bit of a pain in the arse to do so.
