News Story on Amateur Fight Night in SF
http://abclocal.go.com/kgo/story?sectio ... id=6523818
I've been to a fight night similar to this in DC, for charity with high-dollar tickets and black-tie. The even did raise some cash, but I'm not sure where it went. The atmosphere was a little weird, but maybe that's just because 99% of the shows have the same audiences and venues - and it was just so different. Anyone from this area have an opinion on this particular event? I tend not to believe everything I see in the news. I've been on the other end of misleading reporting . . .
-Never heard of the "no ring girls" rule. I've seen them often at shows and sometimes wearing less than in this report.
-No parents allowed definitely would fly for me as a parent or a coach
-$5000 for a boxing club to clear for a night is a lot of money
-Pretty crazy that the guys says he puts the $20K fee back into his boxing club that has no boxers.
What does everyone think?

Two of SF's exclusive clubs have been having private "fight" nights for years. The "parents not allowed" is misleading - there isn't any room for them to sit and watch - generally there is a place in the back, out of sight. And parent's do have a choice whether or not their child participates.
There isn't any such rule. And the CSAC is NOT in charge of amateur boxing. They probably are trying to figure out a way to cash in.-Never heard of the "no ring girls" rule. I've seen them often at shows and sometimes wearing less than in this report.
Not in these types of shows - especially in San Francisco. One of the USC frats used to have a yearly private show years ago. Some of the money raised went to the boxing club who put on the show; most of it went to the frat.-$5000 for a boxing club to clear for a night is a lot of money
I've known Sonny Marson for years and he is the person who usually puts on the private shows in SF. I think the interviewers caught him off guard. I'm sure, and could be wrong, that some of the money he makes goes to the various clubs who participate.Pretty crazy that the guys says he puts the $20K fee back into his boxing club that has no boxers.
I can't believe that the PD is actually going to investigate - these shows have been around for more than 20 years and there is just now an interest by law enforcement? Yeah, sure.
Oh well - another black eye for amateur boxing.
Re: News Story on Amateur Fight Night in SF
I think it's a lot to do about nothing. Some people like to make big issues out of minor issues.
Boxers need a place to box. If they are at a nice show in a safe enviroment, where they get feed food and their club makes some money, I don't see a problem with it. That's better treatment then they get at most LBC shows.
NCBA teams box in the fall at several Athletic Club shows that are for their members. Often the members are in Tux's or at least suits. Some clubs give boxers comp tickets to get in family and some don't want non members, usually due to lack of room for extra people who also probably won't be dressed the same as the members. If we wanted to get in an extra guy, parent, whoever, we get them in and just say they are part of the team. The NCBA boxers get a chance to network with guys who one day might employ them. As a coach, I love those shows. The problem is we get calls from all over the country now because every city has at least one of these fancy athletic clubs and they all know about the shows that we do and want the NCBA teams to participate. We don't have enough open dates to accommodate them since we save the second semester for competitions on college campuses.
As for the claim that the tickets were $125, you have to remember they got a nice dinner and open bar so that's where a lot of that money went. Try going to a Morton's Steak or Chris Ruth Steak House with unlimited bar and see what the bill will be. It will be more than $125.

Thanks, Jim. Well said. 8)
Re: News Story on Amateur Fight Night in SF
That is a really wierd story. It was obviously biased. It looks to me like the people who run the private show are doing a great job promoting the sport. I think it would be a good idea for a competing TV station to do a similar story on the events focusing on the positives and show how that channel didn't know what they were talking about (no ring girls?, clubs can't try to make money so they can buy new equipment?)
I'm glad I don't live in SF.

I agree. Here's the blog with a few more comments http://iteamblog.abc7news.com/2008/11/h ... -bull.htmlskinnyman wrote:That is a really wierd story. It was obviously biased.
We can only wish. Truth doesn't sell, unfortunately. Like I said, I've been on the other side or at least had knowledge of so many stories that were misrepresented - I never believe what I read or see in the media in general (and I'm in the industry)skinnyman wrote: It looks to me like the people who run the private show are doing a great job promoting the sport. Hey wiseguy, I put your boxers on early at that athletic club show so that your money guy could take you out afterwards to Morton's and you never even came back with a doggie bag. Nice guy. How was it?squarering wrote:Jmac, I will take your advice and go to a Mortons steak house. I'll let you know how I make out.
You also left your passbooks you were in such a hurry to eat. You can pick them up tomorrow night at the Army-Navy match.
Re: News Story on Amateur Fight Night in SF
That article was idiotic in so many ways. God, the media needs to do some flipping research before writing stupid crap. And who do these people for the CSAC think they are? They have 0 say over anything in amateur boxing, none. Seems like they're just pissy they aren't getting paid a sanctioning fee.
Re: News Story on Amateur Fight Night in SF
Once upon a time, the CSAC received around $90,000 from pro ticket money (a percentage going to amateur boxing). Because there are 4 LBC's in California, they just couldn't decide how to split up the money and so spent it on themselves. They sent their inspectors to our shows, had no understanding of our rules, couldn't read the rule book correctly, tried to make their own rules and generally were royal pains in the asses and mucked up badly - until the money was gone. Haven't seen them since.
Actually, Kolya, state boxing commissions do have something to do with amateur boxing, however most of them opt to let USA Boxing run that side of it rather than attempting to take it on themselves.

All I can say is Woof.
Re: News Story on Amateur Fight Night in SF
Yes, state commissions legally can control amateur boxing in their state but most or all just opt to let usa boxing take control.
Re: News Story on Amateur Fight Night in SF
I can tell you the whole story about the uproar with fight night in SF.My gym is here in San Francisco, and i know the people who put on these very good private shows,in fact my boxers participate on these private shows, and two of my boxers were shown on that news investigation video. What it comes down to is two disgruntled coaches who i will not name, one a veteran coach who thinks theres a conspiracy theory in anything he cant have his hands in,and the second,a former female world kickboxing champion whose now the formers mouthpiece and pitbull, who now just got her coaching licsense and is making lots of false accusations,my opinion is that these two characters are really jealous that they dont know how to or want to put on a show of there own,and this really fuels theyre jealousy

I will - heard it was Salinas which didn't surprise me at all. I'll never forget the year at the JOs when he was in the airport shouting that USA Boxing was run by the mafia. Sigh. What it comes down to is two disgruntled coaches who i will not name,
Re: News Story on Amateur Fight Night in SF
Boxmel,I guess you know Salinas good, personally i get along with him,Ive never had a problem with him,but i know his reputation,if he doesnt get his way he causes problems, unfortunatly this woman who coaches with him is his mouthpiece and she is a nut,i heard how he made a scene in the ring at the Olympic Trials in 2000 when Nonito Donaire lost

Umm - he doesn't attract the most intelligent people....
i
He made a scene at the time Nonito lost to Brian Viloria on an 8-6. He made a bigger scene when Glenn was supposed to box Karoz Norman in the Challenger's Bracket. He, Glenn and Nonito did a sit-down protest for at least 10 minutes while poor Karoz was waiting in his corner to box. I felt so very sorry for Karoz. Glenn was DQ'd and a grievance was filed against Robert et al.heard how he made a scene in the ring at the Olympic Trials in 2000 when Nonito Donaire lost

ON DECEMBER 13TH AT KINGS GYM IN OAKLAND,ROBERT SALINAS,HIS STEP SON JUAQIN GALLARDO AND ROBERTS' PITBULL RAMONA GATTO WERE PROTESTING OUTSIDE KINGS SHOW ALONG WITH ABOUT 20-25 OTHER OF THEIR FIGHTERS AND FRIENDS.IT WAS A COMPLETE JOKE,THEY WERE CARRYING SIGNS PROTESTING ABOUT PRIVATE SHOWS AND HOW USA BOXING IS USING KIDS,BUT WHY PROTEST KINGS SHOW?IT WAS A REGULAR USA BOXING SANCTIONED SHOW,AND MOST FUNNY OF ALL THIS IS THE PLACE WHERE ROBERT TRAINED HIS STEP SON AND LET HIM COMPETE IN SMOKERS,BUT I SENSE A LITTLE BITTERNESS ON SALINAS,CAUSE HE GOT KICKED OUT OF KINGS RECENTLY
