'Cheo Aponte' International (Results) Caguas, Puerto Rico

12th 'Cheo Aponte' International Tournament May 19-23 2009 Caguas, Puerto Rico

Last night was the first evening of competition of this tournament. There were some countries like Canada and Venezuela who canceled last week therefore it will include 5 teams from Puerto Rico, a team from New York and Dominican Republic and Ecuador's national teams. There are some tough weight classes like the 51 kg with the possible remath between Youth World Champion, Jonathan 'Bomba' Gonzalez and Central-american and Pan-american Games Champion, olimpian McWilliam Arroyo. Gonzalez won their first meeting last February in Puerto Rico's National Tournament Isaac Barrientos. There are also some other olimpians, like Jose Pedraza (PUR), Patricio Calero (ECU), Juan Carlos Payano (DOM) and Argenis Nuñez (DOM).

Hi Ricky, how was the McWilliams Arroyo-Jonathan Gonzalez bout? I really think both are world class fighters. I was hugely impressed by Gonzalez at the world youths last year. Have you seen both their fights?

It was a very good fight, 9 minutes of action. 'Bomba' (Gonzalez) dominated their first fight with his speed but this time around 'Willie' (Arroyo) was the faster of the two and I think he was better prepared, sparring with a very fast pro kid and that help him a lot. They showed great sportmanship after the fight and I think they know they will meet again soon.
