Robinson's 168lb madness series...

Post by Robinson »

No 3 knock down, the fighters at their peaks, when they were near
or around 168lbs. 12 rounders. 24 hr weigh in.

Thomas Hearns Vs Harold Johnson

Floyd Patterson Vs James Toney

Roy Jones Jr Vs Sugar Ray Leonard

Mike McCallum Vs Archie Moore

Jake LaMotta Vs Tommy Burns

Bob Fitzsimmons Vs Nigel Benn

Michael Spinks Vs Sam Langford

Ezzard Charles Vs Iran Barkley

How do you see them...?

I see Patterson - Toney as competitive.....even interesting. James' beard might get him through the lightening blitzes of Patterson. James is cagey enough to stay in it to the end for sure. Not sure if Toney could win, but he could make for a miserable night for Floyd.

Okay, I should spend some time looking this up and assessing where these guys were in their respective careers when they were around this weight… But I’m just going to give it a go from memory…

Thomas Hearns Vs Harold Johnson

Hearns at 168 was still a beast but he couldn’t always hold a shot. Johnson was yet to become the 175 super-skilled fighter. Even so I think Johnson probably takes this. His size and skill will eventually see him stop Hearns late in a close, competitive fight (cards even at the time).

Johnson KO 12

Floyd Patterson Vs James Toney

I’ve never seen Paterson at this weight. If I imagine a 168 version of the HW Floyd then his willingness to use his handspeed and trade will see Toney’s counters hitting home. But Floyd should handle the punches at 168 better than he did at HW so I can imagine him holding on to win a tight decision

Paterson WSD 12

Roy Jones Jr Vs Sugar Ray Leonard

Jones is bigger and more powerful than Leonard. He has the edge on everything here except for chin. Leonard was more than capable of finding Jones (unlike any of his other opponents at this weight). Leonard, properly prepared, would be behind on points and would be hurt badly at times but when he lands I don’t see Jones coping or regrouping. Ray lands a one punch KO.

Leonard KO 9

Mike McCallum Vs Archie Moore

Archie was beaten by Burley and others at this weight and was still to become the great fighter despite being a fabulous prospect. Mccallum was a seasoned pro by this point. I think Mike can do to Archie what Overlin did to Charles. I realise this won’t be popular…

McCallum WSD 12 Moore

Jake LaMotta Vs Tommy Burns

LaMotta – Burns would be a great fight. I just feel Jake is too much for Burns.

LaMotta UD 12

Bob Fitzsimmons Vs Nigel Benn

I love Benn but Fitz could do what G-Man couldn’t finish. I think Benn makes a scrap of it but Fitz would KO him. Anyone who can be stopped will be stopped by Bob.

Fitz KO 5

Michael Spinks Vs Sam Langford

At 168 Langford is just so much more proven. I’d expect Langford to beat a green Spinks. Mike would have his moments but Langford would stop him late.

Langford TKO 12

Ezzard Charles Vs Iran Barkley

Barkley too crude for this master. Charles slices him up and stops him. Different level of fighter.

Charles TKO 7

- I see a poorly thought out series.

Hearns, Patterson, Leonard, McCallum, Benn, and Spinks were nowhere near prime form at those weights. Moreover, you got Charles fighting Barkley as if the result was up for grabs.

Might be an aspiring promoter though as you've dragged in some legends to put them at disadvantage to pad out the public odds for private wager.

It's an elimination series, and I have some super fights I would like to
make some good PPV money on.

Besides Barkley and his people are confident at mixing it up with
Charles.
But I agree Barkley is a long shot against Charles.

Those fighters were not in prime form, I do agree, but their skills and
vunerabilities made them just as entertaining.

You know...

Even though Fitz vs Benn is one of the easier to call fights...

It would probably be the most exciting while it lasted.

A very skinny, green FLoyd at 168 lbs wouldn't have been able to beat a prime Toney IMO, but make it at 175 and Floyd lays on a whupping.

Roy UD Leonard

Moore UD McCallum . . .McCallum at 168 was way past his best.

Hmmm, interesting matchup. I'll say the faster, more bouncy Burns with a decision over LaMotta

Fitz KO4 Benn

Langford KO 8 Spinks

Charles TKO 9 Barkley

you don't like jones and that's fine. you admit jones is the better fighter but he's going to get caught with a one punch ko by leonard who's fighting 21 lbs over his prime weight. this is the same leonard who struggled with lalonde and got a gift draw against hearns at this weight. jones wins the match-up in pretty dominant fashion imo. i think you know that too but your hatred for jones makes you lie to yourself.

Alright, I admit it. It was part wind up, part wishful thinking. I'm surprised nobody called me on it earlier, so good for you.

I don't think Jones was the better fighter (and that's truthfully and as objectively as anyone can be). I think Leonard was a notch above BUT Jones as the bigger man should win.

Leonard had power and accuracy though (even in this division) and will land on the button during the fight. It's not completely inconceivable though.

i agree with your last sentence. anything can happen in this sport. i think a better match-up would be at 160 between these two. leonard at his best would be complete hell for anyone between 147 and 160 imo. leonard showed a lot of heart in his "draw" to hearns in the final round. he was close to having hearns down.

ok, i'll answer as it seems only i have been thinking it over. tunney catches up with billy after a close-ish first 9 and dominates the last few rounds for a clear decision.
