Mayweather, is he the greatest ever?

Post by WildWaylon »

 Who would have thought PBF could have dominated Marquez the way he did. We know he had the size and weight advantage but even so his speed and skills made him the master anyway. Is he the best at any weight, in boxings history, and if not who would you put above him.

Yes. I thought Mayweather would win by knockout, which he could have if he went for it. He took it very easy last night. His speed and reach meant that Marquez had no chance. Even when Marquez landed flush, he's not big enough at that weight to make a dent, and especially so because Mayweather has a fantastic chin.

I had no doubts Mayweather would win, but not by a complete shutout.

Well we simply don't know yet, Last night did not prove much at all imo.

It was a great performance but the size differnce was massive and obvious.

If he does the same in his next fights against Cotto , Pacman, Mosley then he may well prove to be the greatest ever but intill then NO

He was a huge odds on favorite with odds of 1.25 so most people thought he would win,
impressive performance though :box:

Its very hard to see how anyone could beat Mayweather including Pacquiao, very hard to hit. I would give Paul Williams the best chance because of his awkward underated style and height advantage. Would agree with others, i wouldn't even consider him as a great until he fights and beats the likes of Pac,Williams, Moseley, Cotto etc and then he can be put alongside Duran, Monzon, Sugar Ray, Hearns to name but a few.

No its not a joke, a little contraversial maybe. Some my think SRL was better, or maybe Ali. PBF is definately up there with the best.

Jayzus Christ.

No, he is not the best ever.

/thread

Oh, by the by, Hearns would pitch a virtual shutout at welter or light-middle, thank you; Floyd would never get past the stick, & Leonard would actually kill him, I think. Starling would time him, Breland would beat him. Duran, at either lightweight or welter, would be too much for him. Curry would beat him, Whitaker (at either light or welter) would beat him, Chavez would break him at lightweight, Arguello he might have a chance with but Pryor would do him & on, & on...

I think he beats all three, but Cotto is another matter. PS no need for rudeness.

He's top 100, maybe. He's no where near SRL, Ali, Hearns, Hagler, Duran, Jones Jr, Robinson.

Yes, actually I think rudeness is completely justified on this occasion.

Name me one fighter that Mayweather has beaten that was as good as Duran at welter (please don't say Oscar, as biting ruthless sarcasm & an explosion of swearing is likely to offend)? & why oh why was the Oscar fight reasonably close (arguably 7-5 or 8-4 in rounds)? 'Cos he just ain't that good.

Very good, yes. Great, maybe? But "the best ever"? You need your fornicating medication looked at.

Just to clarify, the "that good" I was referring to was the OP's ridiculous assertion that FMJ is the best fighter ever to lace on the gloves.

I mean, obviously, I think he's good. Bloody good. But the threads comparing him to Roy Jones, saying that he could beat Pavlik, & this 'un?

Dribble from the mouths of the over-medicated.

There's no reason to be rude. Waylon only asked a question. If anyone thinks the question is beneath them then they can just not click on the topic. Rudeness will get you nowhere.

Great performance, but he has yet to fight

1. Pacquiao

2. Williams

3. Cotto

4. Mosley

At the moment, he is the best around and is a great fighter, who will go down in the annals of boxing history, but for me, to cement his position, he has to fight the opponents mentioned above. One fighter who he will struggle to eclipse is :

Sugar Ray Robinson

For me, the finest fighter to ever lace up a pair of gloves

Datsue, what would your prediction be for the following fights.

Floyd vs Cotto/Pac/Mosley/Williams

It would be nice, if you actuallyy explained how they would beat him ?

I'm not saying they would or they wouldn't, but to just type out a stream of top fighters and say they would all beat MM without any explanation as to how, is very lame

Slight exageration. On that basis, Jones Jr is nowhere near Hearns or Leonard.......

The trouble is most people look back with rose-tinted specs on -everything in the past is better than the present. Whether it be boxers, footballers, tv programmes or sweets you used to get in the sweet shop...

Its not untill its gone that you truly appreciate things.

I think Sugar Ray Seales was marginally better than him & p4p, Julius Francis is also better, but nobody else IMO. :TU:

people who don't know boxing really need to get off of Floyd's d!ck. Greatest ever? he needs to beat the elites in his weight, he hasn't. He ducks Williams, ducks Mosley, he ducked Margarito, he ducks a load of people. When you say hes the greatest fighter of all time, you really need to think about who is in that category and how they match up against floyd, and actually...if you kno anything about boxing you will realise a lot of fighters surpass floyd. Today, i have Mosley and Hopkins having a better legacy then Floyd. p4p G.O.A.Ts- Ray robinson, Ray Leonard, Roberto Duran, Homicide Hank, Joe Louis, etc. They have all beaten the best in there weights, and other weights, defying the odds. What was so impressive about beating a guy, who styles wise was soo good for floyd, and so much smaller than floyd. Marquez is small highest he fought at was 135 and he looked blown up at that...he also took a lot of punches against Juan Diaz, now i love Marquez and he is a greattt fighter but if he got hit by a much slower juan diaz what did you people expect from a quick fighter like floyd, he also is patient and a counter puncher which lets floyd think, floyd doesnt like people rushing him, how can u counter punch a bigger quicker floyd? And i hardly think Floyd has a "superb chin" just because he took a couple of right hands from Marquez who aint a concussive puncher and defintly hasnt carried his power up.

No. I'm not sure I'd even make him top 5 in any weight division he's fought.
