Canadian amatures

November had all of Nova Scotias amature boxers training hard and waiting anxiuosly for the 2008 provincials.
not much was documented on the day of the fights but I was told Dartmouths favorite Mike Campbell ( 5 - 1 ) was not given an opponent he gained a no contest decision win. Will he be at nationals ? who knows but one things for sure the kid has fight.

well let me you they are looking alot better this year than ever before..
for 147 many names come to mind but who stands out most would be custio clayton who has a very impressive record being 86 - 3 he was the 63kg class national champion in 2003. like i mentioned earlier michael campbell also looks to have a good future in the sport having lost his last fight by a point which many think he should have one against an opponent with over 25 fights. other names that come to mind are Cyrus Taylor who destroyed his competition at provincials earning his way on the nova scotian provincial team again , this is his third time winning provincials in the 54kg class and he won bronze last year at nationals in the 50 kg class. for females beth muir is somthing to watch out for At Provincials she boxed brilliantly and surprised a lot of people when fighting two time canadian champ norma marshall

bobby tapper
gary johnson
and many other maritime coaches seem to be doing a great job this year with training kids hard and because
of that much more amatures are getting fights and winning aswell.

Interesting seeing the name Wayne Gordon in Nova Scotia.
Would the current Wayne Gordon be connected to Wayne Gordon that represented Canada in the 1984 Olympics. And who could forget Taylor Gordon who onced coached the Navy boxers in Esquimalt, BC in the Sixties.

It is a very sad fact that the depth and substace of information
on Canadian AMATEUR boxing is limited.

Starting with the Boxing Canada site
at http://www.boxing.ca
there is very little information.

In the so called history section, they do have a
male boxer of the year section fom 1982.
Some known names would be
1982 - Willie deWit, 1984 - Shawn O'Sullivan
1990 - Raymond Downie and 1998 - Mike Strange.
Lennox Lewis also appears.

The site also mentions some competitions
such as a "Dual Canada vs England+ junior tournament
One of the coaches was Bob Pegues from BC.
There is no coaches background information.
For those that may care about such things
Pegues is a former member of the Nanaimo Boxing Club.
The club was started in 1971 by Dan Wright and Brian Zelley
with help from John Ormandy and the former founder
of the Newcastle Boxing Club (Nanaimo (1963 - 1968),
George Nepper.

Bits and pieces of information on clubs can be found,
but most amateur boxing club sites are very limited
in history and details.

Some specific individuals may be found such as
New Brunswick's Robert (Bob) Edgett
Before starting an amateur boxing club in
the Fifties, Edgett won the Maritime 175-pound title
in 1949. Also, in the December 1980 issue of
"Boxing Illustrated" there was a three page article
on Bob by Jerry Fitch titled
"Canada's Goodwill Ambassador"

Now, it shouldn't come as a great surprise that
amateur boxing in Canada is on the ropes.
I don't believe it requires some imports from
Cuba or Europe to fix the problems.
Maybe, all current coaches and officials need
to revive the spirit of effective communication
and work for a big revival from coast to coast.

yes i was talking about the wayne gordon who represented us at the olympics, his father taylor is also a known face in the nova scotian amature boxing scene as he is at almost every card judgeing or doing somthing to help out. waynes son taylor is an amature as well. we also have gary johnson the father of kirk johnson who represented us in barcelona at the 1992 olympics. gary is the main trainer at " city of lakes ABC " were the amatures i mentioned earlier train ( mike campbell, custio clayton ) city of lakes also has trainer kelsey Fraser who trains canadian super middleweight jason naugler ( 18-9 ) as a pro.

yes i agree canadian amature boxing is at a low level at the moment but it is rapidly picking up and we have definatly not seen the last of it.

how come ns isnt sending a heavyweight. i know they are sending a superheavy. i am sure you guys had a few heavyweights fighting

There are many avenues and roads that will lead us into the bright lights of Canadian Amateur Boxing, but I guess we need to turn on the lights.

The real tragedy of our boxing history is pre 1969 stuff is scattered like the autumn leaves on a windy day. But through the efforts of many, we can punch our way out of

For pre 1969, you will not find it on the Boxing Canada or the Provincial Boxing sites.
Many of those involved in amateur boxing are likely far removed from the least trace of
amateur boxing in 1968 and earlier. I know Taylor Gordon, if he was active could recall some action from the Sixties such as the 1963 BC Golden Gloves, or the 1964 Vancouver Island
Amateur Boxing Championships, or the daring and deeds of the Royal Canadian Navy boxers
based in Esquimalt, but he is one of a few.

Looking back to pre-1969, there are thousands of stories but who will bring out the drums

Keep your eyes open for a kid named Josh Wilson at the nationals this year in Halifax. He fights under the last name of Benoit. Just turned 15 yrs old. He got a walk thru provincials opens this year as was no one to fight him. But the week before he beat the winner of the older youth open Ontario Championship Category convincingly @ 165lbs. And that kid beat some strong fighters, Cameron mcGean, and one named Tanner Warner who won World Ringside in Aug. he doesn't have a lot of santioned matches as can't get them living up in the Sault with nothing close by. But has been fighting 20+ yr olds in exhibitions since he was 13.

Keep your eyes open for him been watching him for a few years now and his folliwing is growing as is walking thru everyone and loaded with speed, smarts and talent.

Well in the Provinces some of the new or
returning champions have been decided, so now is the
time for those Provincial Champions and other to get ready for the 2012 Nationals in two key locations.

The recent medal results of Canadian boxers in the
2011 Pan american gamesis a positive sign.

INTERNATIONA AMATEUR BOXING
I have set-up an Internationa amateur Boxing
page on Facebook, so over the next seven or so months
I hoe to touch bae on the roads being travelled as boxers from
Britain, USA and Canada move along the road to the Olympic Game in London. For Canada's women boxers it is likely that we will have two possbile 2012 Olympic boxers, but for the men the road is long and winding, but they are quickly running out of blacktop to reach
the plane ride to London in 2012.
