If Pac beats Clottey and Mayweather beats Mosley, then Pac beats Mayweather, there's no doubt that Pacquiao should be considered as 'one of' the very best P4P fighters of all time. What hurts his claim to the title the most though is his loss to Morales in their first fight and his two close fights with Marquez that many feel he lost.

As for Mayweather, it would be very far fetched to make a claim for him, his record does not stand up to it. Beating a 39 year old Mosley who will have been inactive for 18 months come fight night, and a naturally smaller Pacquiao is not near enough to clinch that title. He would need to go on and do a lot more, but i very much doubt that he would. Frustratingly, many fans would, on the back of Mosley/Pacquiao, hail him as the greatest P4P fighter ever, and i'll be forever pissed off by it!

Whilst Mosley is rightly the underdog, he is going to be by far the strongest, hardest hitting, and quickest welterweight that Mayweather has faced to date. Sure, Mosley is 39, but he is still rock hard, and is unlikely to be easily deterred by Mayweather's shoeshining.

Cotto beat Mosley by fighting him in the trenches, as well as using lateral movement. He had to fight Mosley hard to keep him honest, and I think Mayweather will have to do the same. I think Mosley is too savvy and too quick to be kept at bay with 10 shots a round.

My question is, is Mayweather able any more to throw more shots than that. He seems so reluctant these days to let his hands go, much like an Roy Jones Jr was late in his career, but Mosley is a cut above the kind of scrubs that Jones fought during his light heavyweight reign (no offence to Clinton Woods).

I think this could be a hard night's work for Mayweather - unless Mosley turns in the kind of performance he did at 154 against Oscar in their second fight - but I think that was down to the weight and pumping too many weights/juicing.

And the catchweight with Cotto and the 147 of Oscar and the possible PED.

This is what keeps it interesting for me. Mosley will get stuck in, he's prepared to take risks to get his own shots off and you would expect his work rate to be higher than Mayweathers. But, quality often counts, and i expect Mayweather to be better defensively and do the better work offensively.

I've been pouring over tapes of Mosley's last few fights and the more i analyze, the more i fancy Mayweather to win this. Throw into the mix Mosley's age and his 18 months of inactivity come fight night and i am finding it very hard to make a case for him at all.

I'll ignore your PED comment, but will concur that Oscar was drained at 147. C'mon though DG, you cannot really have expected Pacquiao to go up to 154 to fight him, surely? As for Cotto, dont go overboard, he was only asked to shed an extra 2lbs.

I think PBF wins this by narrow decision. PBF would have to go on to beat Mosley, Pac and Williams before we use the words "of all time". If Pac beats Clottey, PBF and Mosley then he could make a similar claim.

And what if Floyd is on form, which I think its fair to say he will be? Mosley will go for it in this one, which will bring out the best in FLoyd! I see Mosley forcing Floyd to fight aswell as box & be tactical. As mad it may sound to some, I'm going for the bold call of Floyd scoring a stoppage!

Yes, its a bold call, but he has the sharpness to do it. If he does score a stoppage then what the hell will the haters then come out with about him?

It does'nt sound that mad to me, i'm toiling with the possability of Mayweather scoring the stoppage also.

I've been anti-Mayweather on many occassions, but like to think of myself as being a realist and definately not a hater. The fact is, Mosley, at 39 years of age and comming into this fight on that back of 18 months inactivity, is by far the biggest challenge of Floyd's entire career. That speaks volumes to me.

Why?

A fight of this calibre is 8 years overdue for Mayweather, he could have been mixing it up with the true elite on many occassions but choose himself not to. Its a crying shame for the sport that he's just getting around to it now, albeit with an inactive 39 year old.

Its very probable that he did not actually want this fight, but through a serious of events that unfolded over the last few weeks (Pacquiao fight falling through, then Berto pulling out against Mosley) and Floyd found himself in a situation that he could not get out of - sign for the Mosley fight or face public ridicule.

I dont feel i'm being over cynical with my evaluation, and i'm definately not a Floyd hater, though i see no reason to praise him for anything other than the talent he shows inside the ring.

Yes, the irony is thick. Mayweather insisted on dope testing for Pacquiao, pre-fight, but already knows "BALCO" Shane's pre-fight antics.

So Floyd didn't want this fight, thats why he signed..... he wasn't forced.... there was plenty of other options for him. Yes, you are being over cynical - sorry. Mosely could have also waited when Berto was good and ready to re-focus on the boxing.

Praise him when he does fight a legitimate, ambitious, Welterweight with skills - all I am saying. Mosley is either #1 or #2 in the devision now, just coming off arguably his greatest performance..... but no - its 8 years to late and his age gets cited.

Whoever, Floyd fight - whatever he does he gets criticised on here..... just read the forum archive.

Really? what were they then, Mallignaggi, Mathew Hatton and co?

The serious of events that unfolded left Floyd with very few credible routes to take other than Mosley himself. I doubt many people would argue against that, or the possibility of him feeling the pressure to sign for the Mosley fight. Does that wording sit better with you?

stujones wrote:Yes, you are being over cynical - sorry. Mosely could have also waited when Berto was good and ready to re-focus on the boxing.
Are you serious, why on earth would he do that? He's been inactive for over a year waiting on the big fights and there is no telling when Berto will have his mind right for boxing again. I doubt even Berto would grudge him moving on to another oponent.

Of course his age gets cited, he's going to be 39 and comming in off an 18 month layoff. But all praise to Mayweather, he da man, ducking and dodging for all his worth over a period of almost a decade, but wait, he's stepping up now, be sure to praise him while you can as this may be the last time he ever fights at this level, and not becuase i think he'll loose, but becuase i'm sure he'll go back to cherry picking inferior oponents straight after this is over.

this peice makes for some interesting reading:
By Dan Rafael, ESPN

Where, oh where, is Floyd's signature?

Tuesday, February 2, 2010 | Print Entry

Richard Schaefer, the CEO of Golden Boy Promotions, is usually a calm, cool and collected sort. The former Swiss banker doesn't get rattled easily.

Tuesday morning, however, he sounded rattled, expressing concern about why Floyd Mayweather Jr. has not signed his contract to face welterweight champ Shane Mosley on May 1 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, in as big of a fight as there is in the sport.

It has been five days since both sides acknowledged an agreement on terms.

Mosley, of course, put pen to paper on Friday in Las Vegas, where his attorney, Judd Burstein, went through the paperwork with him point by point.

"He is excited to move forward with the bout," Burstein told me at the time.

Burstein also added that he had been assured by Leonard Ellerbe, one of Mayweather's advisers, that there were no problems on their side.

"I confirmed with Leonard that there are no issues," Burstein said.

Ellerbe's quote to me for the story I wrote Friday was, "All of the deal points have been agreed to. We still have to put pen to paper, but everything is agreed to."

Yet five days later, Schaefer still does not have a signed agreement from Mayweather. He was clearly at wit's end when he called me about it Tuesday morning.

"He still hasn't signed. I am so frustrated," Schaefer said. "I wanted both guys to go down to the Super Bowl in Miami to do some promotional stuff. I don't know what Floyd is waiting for. I have no clue. I have a signed contract from Shane on my desk. I have nothing from Floyd."

Schaefer said he is in constant touch with Ellerbe and Al Haymon, Mayweather's other adviser, and when he asks them where the paperwork is, the response is always the same: "Every day, it's the next day. They say, 'Don't worry, it's going to come.' Well, where is it? I'm waiting for the signature before we can move on."

Burstein said he and Mosley were also quite aggravated by the delay.

"I am outraged," Burstein said when I reached him Tuesday afternoon. "I have a client who acts in a professional manner. He allows me to negotiate a deal for him in constant consultation with him. When it all gets put on paper, we go over it and, as promised, he signs if it's OK. That's what happened on Friday. It was signed with the assurance from Al Haymon and Leonard Ellerbe that everything was agreed to and there was no problem."

So what does Burstein believe is the issue?

"It's either one of two things that has happened," he said. "Either he's rethought the wisdom of risking his undefeated record against Shane or he chooses to act like a 7-year-old. Hopefully, it's the latter and he will mature very quickly. But either of these possibilities is completely unacceptable to us. He's going to end up in a fight with Mosley. The only question is whether it will be in the ring or in court."

Now, May 1 is still a ways off, but for a megafight the magnitude of Mosley-Mayweather, kicking it off with promotional appearances at the Super Bowl is significant. When Mayweather and Oscar De La Hoya met in May 2007, their media rounds at the Super Bowl generated enormous interest in the fight, which went on to set the all-time pay-per-view record.

Schaefer wants to follow the same blueprint. He said Bernard Hopkins and Roy Jones Jr., who will meet April 3 in a pay-per-view rematch that Golden Boy is co-promoting, will be in Miami to help drum up interest in their fight, so he can't understand why Mayweather is MIA.

So I asked Schaefer if he was concerned that the Mosley-Mayweather fight might be in trouble?

His answer was simply, "Yes."

I asked him if he would elaborate.

"At this point, I don't know," he said. "We want to do some big PR, so this is frustrating. I read Leonard's quotes that it was agreed to and that it was just a matter of time to get it signed, but if it's all done, why isn't it signed?"

Schaefer has been down this road with Mayweather before, perhaps one of the reasons for his concern. He negotiated a fall 2008 rematch between Mayweather and De La Hoya, which also had been agreed to and was on the verge of being announced. However, Mayweather never signed the paperwork and instead announced his retirement, which lasted 18 months.

"I am not having flashbacks to anything, but [the Mosley fight] is still not signed," Schaefer said. "I don't know what it means. Obviously, we can't move forward with the promotion, including some important activities that were planned for this coming weekend, unless we have a signed deal."

Before negotiating with Mosley, Mayweather was close to a deal to face Manny Pacquiao on March 13 in what would have been, by far, the sport's biggest fight. But that fight fell apart shortly before what was supposed to have been a kickoff news conference in early January. The reason was because the fighters couldn't reach a compromise on drug-testing protocol. Mayweather insisted on testing that went far beyond the rules of the Nevada State Athletic Commission. While Pacquiao accepted some additional testing, he refused random blood testing.

Both fighters moved on. Pacquiao quickly made a deal to defend his welterweight belt against Joshua Clottey on March 13 at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

Mayweather and Mosley began their talks after Mosley's Jan. 30 unification fight with Andre Berto was canceled.

So while Pacquiao wrapped up his deal with Clottey in about two seconds and Mosley signed on the dotted line in pretty short order, we all continue to wait for Mayweather's John Hancock yet again, including Schaefer.

"I always tell you, a signed deal is a done deal," Schaefer said. "It will only be done when Floyd signs, and that hasn't happened yet. I don't know of any deal terms that are not agreed to. I don't understand it."

Latest news is that Floyd still hasn't signed, five days after Shane did, and Richard Schafer is bricking it.

From ESPN:
"He still hasn't signed. I am so frustrated," Schaefer said. "I wanted both guys to go down to the Super Bowl in Miami to do some promotional stuff. I don't know what Floyd is waiting for. I have no clue. I have a signed contract from Shane on my desk. I have nothing from Floyd."
