Crolla desperate for Sykes rematch
'Million Dollar' tells Lee 'Million' Collier he must take care of journeyman Razak first
IMPROVED: Crolla insists he is a better fighter now than when he lost to Sykes
JUST over four weeks ago Gary Sykes was crowned the British super-featherweight champion when he won a close unanimous points decision over former British featherweight king Andy Morris. Sat ringside was an interested spectator with more than the usual interest in the fight, Manchester’s Anthony Crolla.
It was back in May of last year that Dewsbury’s Sykes beat Crolla over 10 rounds in a British title eliminator and since then “Million Dollar” has rebuilt under a new trainer and new promoter in Joe Gallagher and the Hattons respectively. Victories over Jon Baguley (who recently beat Vinny Mitchell), Jason Nesbitt and Michael Brodie have seen Crolla put himself back in the title frame and it seems that a Sykes-Crolla rematch is something both fighters want.
“After the fight [Sykes-Morris] I congratulated Gary and he said he would give me a shot at the title and I now hope he sticks to his word,” revealed Crolla. “Sky TV are after evenly-matched, exciting title fights and a dust-up between the pair of us can’t fail to provide excitement. We both have great fans so whether we fight in Yorkshire or over in my neck of the woods it will be a great atmosphere and it can’t fail to be a cracking fight.”
After beating veteran former European super-bantam boss Brodie, it seemed Crolla would get a chance to enter the title mix. Instead the 23-year-old has seen promotional stablemates Andy Morris and Scott Lawton get title chances at 9st 4lbs and feels it is now his turn.
“I do believe I am due a title shot now and feel I should get a crack at Gary Sykes,” opined Crolla. “Look at all the people above me or around me in the rankings, they have all had their shot now and I feel it’s my time to be in the spotlight.
“Andy [Morris] has just had his shot, Scott Lawton had a go at the European title, Carl Johanneson has only just returned, the same can be said of Stephen Foster, so the only person who maybe deserves it more than me is Ricky Burns. Ricky is a great fighter but if he fights [WBO title-holder Roman] Martinez then he is out of the picture and I believe that I should be next in line.”
Crolla is confident that the outcome will be different second time round, feeling that the developments made under his new training team of Joe Gallagher and Kerry Kayes will make the difference he needs to win the big fights.
“I really believe that I am better prepared both mentally and physically for the rematch and I am really sure of getting a win. The sparring I am getting is second to none and I am 100 per cent sure that I’d do a job on him,” said a confident Crolla. “I am punching a lot harder now and the work I am doing with [trainer] Joe [Gallagher] and [nutritionist] Kerry [Kayes] has improved me so much. I think you’ll see that if the fight with Gary comes off. It will be a great fight like the first fight but the result will be different and I think I’d finish the job within the distance.”
Whilst Crolla and his training team are confident of taking on the British champion, the chances of a rematch rest in the hands of Hatton Promotions and the Manchester boxer is confident they will deliver the fight he so craves.
“Hatton Promotions are new to the game but they are doing a wonderful job in getting their fighters all different types of title shots. Thomas McDonagh, Anthony Small, Rob Norton, Andy Morris, Scott Lawton and now the likes of Denton Vassell are all getting their title shots so I feel it’s got to be my turn next,” explained a hopeful Crolla. “They seem to have a good working relationship with the BBBofC [British Boxing Board of Control] so hopefully there won’t be any obstacles put in my way for a Gary Sykes rematch.”
As things stand, Crolla must first beat durable Birmingham journeyman Sid Razak on Saturday night (April 10) on a Hatton Promotions show in association with Bridgewater professional boxing in Salford.
“I am headlining the Salford show and it should be either a six or eight-rounder against Sid Razak,” explained Crolla. “I know he might not have the greatest record but he hardly ever gets stopped and he’s a tough, durable opponent. It’s a good chance for me get some rounds under my belt.”
It was back in April of 2008 when Crolla suffered the biggest shock of his career, losing to Youssef Al Hamidi, and with the British title almost in his grasp Crolla is not taking the Razak lightly.
“I have to be professional for every fight as one little slip-up means that all the title fights that I’ve always dreamed about since being a little kid will go down the drain so I have no problems keeping myself motivated for these keep-busy fights,” he declared.

Re: Crolla lookig to take Sykes!!!!
I think Burns Sykes will now probably happen. I was really, really impressed with Sykes on the way up but against Morris I thought he was fortunate. He had his moments but generally the better boxing throughout came from Morris and I just found Sykes to be unable to find anything 'new' to take the play away from his opponent.
I just wonder if he's found his level, no disgrace- he's fighting amongst the top boys at the weight domestically but there was something missing for me.

Re: Crolla lookig to take Sykes!!!!
I like Crolla, he seems a top lad, he is a good boxer with a massive heart and obvisouly trains hard with his fitness. But I also really like Sykes for the same reasons, if they fought 100 times they would all be close and brilliant fights.

Re: Crolla lookig to take Sykes!!!!
Crolla v Morris would be a good fight that all boxing fans could enjoy , both in same promotional camp so should beeasy to make and then we can see who deserves another go !!
Gary Skykes will only get better so they both need proper fights to improve and make sure Gary does not pull away from them.
