Gary Sykes v. Kevin O'Hara - the breakdown
Syke'd Up!!!!
25 May 2010 - By Leonard Gunning
Surely every new champion deserves an easy first defence, right? Against someone who lets say has lost every title fight they have contested but preferably still has a respectable enough record to ensure the punters will rock up, right?
Maybe that is what newly crowned British super bantamweight Gary Sykes 15-0 (KO 4) had in mind when his team invited Belfast’s Kevin ‘Sweet Pea’ O’Hara 17-5 (KO 5) to step through the ropes with the Dewsbury dynamo to battle it out for his first defence of the coveted Lonsdale belt at the Huddersfield Leisure Centre this Friday.
With the bookies having the Yorkshireman, who recently wrestled the vacant title away from Andy Morris in a twelve round thriller at the same venue in March, a 1/4 odds on favourite and the ominous sign of Team Sykes talking up the credentials of O’Hara it seems like an open and shut case not worth even a preview article.
But Team Sykes hadn’t counted on......................... rest of the article is here

Re: Gary Sykes v. Kevin O'Hara - the breakdown
Really looking forward to this one. O'Hara has the ability to beat Sykes and it appears Sweetpea is taking this one very serious. As mentioned in the article, there are some quality sparring partners in Breens. Odds of a O'Hara decision win are after drifting out to 5/1 on Paddypower for anyone that's interested. Good article again Leonard

You do one to balance it out then Hookie if you think it is 'impartial'. I detected your sarcasm by the way :)Captain Hook wrote:Totally impartial preview from Leonard there...slapbangwhallop wrote:Syke'd Up!!!!

Whatever do you mean Deno? How dare you :)
Ok, here we go....
GARY Sykes is gearing up for the pasting he will give Kevin "The Monobrow" O'Hara with a few pints and an ice lolly.
"He poses no threat and his gym is like an old barn," said Five-Star Sykes, who, in terms of ability, makes Ray Leonard look more like Ray Quinn :)
The odds of 345-1 for O'Hara are generous, so put your house on our Gary.....
There, no probs......

It was written from the perspective of an O'Hara fan IMO.
That's fair enough, you're catering for an Irish audience on that site so it works.
I can't help being a smart arse Len....it's in the blood. Ta ta....

Re: Gary Sykes v. Kevin O'Hara - the breakdown
I actually give O'Hara half a chance here. Sykes was really impressive on his way through and I thought he would go on to achive big things but that he struggled so much with a very good challenger in Morris should surely give O'hara a bit of hope. I'm not sure I fancy the upset but O'Hara might upset the odds in this one.
Hope Sykes gets back to his neat boxing and switch hitting for this one.

It's Irish-Boxing.com what do you expect ?, the reason there is a preview is because O'Hara is in it.Captain Hook wrote:It was written from the perspective of an O'Hara fan IMO.

You may note Sykes vs Morris was not covered by that site, why ?......because it had nothing to do with Irish boxing.
I didn't bother my time watching the Champions League or Heiniken Cup finals this year but I'm sure ITV and Sky gave a nice neutral position for them. Now had an English team been involved in either do you feel this would be the case ?, or would you expect that analysts and Commentators would call the game from the English team's point of view, using phrases such as 'what we hope to see from x is', because this is what I would of expect and to be honest I don't see any problems with that either.
it's Irishboxing.com, of course it's going to mainly give the story from the Irish fighters side of view, the people they are catering for are mainly Irish and they will predominantly want the Irish side of things.
As for the fight itself, I think it'll be close but I have a feeling Sykes will edge a close decision leaving O'Hara contemplating will he ever make the step up to title level.
Re: Gary Sykes v. Kevin O'Hara - the breakdown
Understand your point mate - but this certainly isn't the case with the BBC. They bend over so far to be neutral, it's untrue. I've almost vomited in the past with John Motson's fawning over the likes of Germany when they've been playing (poorly) against England.BigEars wrote:

Re: Gary Sykes v. Kevin O'Hara - the breakdown
Absolute búllshit! As you brought up international soccer, lets look at the current coverage that is given to the World Cup on the BBC - is the coverage split equally amongst all the participating countries? Is it fornicate - its England, England, England! And then they will probably wheel out Ian Wright who I am sure is just paid to jump around the studio screaming "England!!!". Now I have no problem with that really, after all they are the only constituent of the United Kingdom that has qualified for the tournament and its a UK television station. But if you think that the BBC in the UK is some pan-international bastion of fair and equal coverage then you, along with them, are so Anglo-centric that you are brainwashed into think that the slightest mention of another perspective other than a purely British one is "bending over so far to be neutral".Ian 'Mr' McNeilly wrote:Understand your point mate - but this certainly isn't the case with the BBC. And also its you obviously don't read half of the boxing reports on the BBC than. Most of them are written from a Welsh perspective because a Welsh guy writes most of them. When Prince Arron won Prizefighter the headline of the main article on the BBC's Boxing page was "Bradley Pryce loses Prizefighter".
It seems here that you are throwing a wobbler because I have the audacity to consider that Sweet Pea might have a slightest modicum of an opportunity in this contest. Laughable!
Get a grip of yourself!

just had a text from Kevin, weigh in went well and he tipped in at a pound lighter than Sykes. He is feeling good and relaxed and ready to take the title tonight.
