Whats the best physique u have seen on a boxer?

Post by gambler49 »

For me there is no doubt, Sonny Liston.
Now I'm not talking the body u would like to have. But the best FIGHTERS physique.....
I've heard some say Ken Norton had a great physique. But thats not a fighters body. Some might say Wlad has the best. I'd say he is too big. Others sed Clay had the best physique. But to me it's SL. His hands where massive his shoulders where wide, his reach was very long for his height(6'1"). His waist was thick (no fat). And he was the perfect weight for a fighter, around 212lbs.

The other fighter in 2nd place for me is Max Bear. He is one of the biggest HWs I've ever seen. And again he was around 212 lbs

Mike Weaver obviously comes to mind in the HW division. But I was always impressed by Razor Ruddock. He had a tremendous physique at 6ft 3 and 230lbs. His sickening power aside, he had excellent speed on his shots and could also be suprisingly light on his feet. In the late 80's he really used good movement in many fights. His wide shoulder base and long arms were also useful attributes in tying up a foe.
As for non HW's of recent times, Chris Eubank was powerfully built, so were many of the late 80's MW crop such as Frank Tate,Iran Barkley, and of course Hearns.

Is it possible that we can keep the gayness to the Other Sports section?
Btw: Haye don't hav a good FIGHTERS body. Look how skinny his wrists are. Hees just a built up guy. Then again so was Holyfield, but Holy wern't human.

What is a "fighters" body.

Looking the part and being the part are seldom the same
thing.

I have a lot of 'buff' and solid looking guys with their tribal
tatts, lats and bulging muscles come through the gym door
that barely make it through a warm up.

Best physique is like judging body building its all subjective,
what YOU think looks the best and coolest etc...

This is where ur missing the point. I'm not banging on about mucsle size etc. But the things that count: big shoulders, long arms, short body to leg ratio, thick neck and waist.
U could say that Marciano didn't have the best body, but he made very good of it. But thats not the point.
Btw big muscles are a big disadvantage in boxing as im sure u well know.

Yes but when others are saying that they thing say... Haye has the
best physique etc
your saying no no no I mean like you know Liston.

To many people they think Brock Lesnar has the BEST look for a
fighter.

I do agree with you though... I see a guy with folded ears, flat
nose, wide shoulders, lean hip and thick legs Im thinking he is
a combat athlete or an athlete of sorts. So to me thats a good look.

Though some of us have genes that dont let us get such a 'cool'
and effective look :(

I concur , in this age of built up fighters, it has almost become fashionable for trainers to include weight training and magazines to harp on about weights helping a fighter. Sure they probably help a grappling MMA artist but for boxing its a no no in my personal experience. I have boxed at amateur level and hold a high ranking belt in judo. Undoubtedly weights help you in judo but in boxing they seriously affect hand speed and flexibility and mobility.

A good fighters physique is one with big shoulders, naturally muscular arms,a strong wrist and neck muscles and very importantly a strong midsection which helps generate power. of course the great Thomas Hearns had a incredible physique around 1984-87.

Let me make it clear that I meant Boxer wen I sed fighter. Brock Lesner has a good body for grappling, but would be useless for boxing.

You are talking essentially about stereotypical 'fighter' traits . . thick neck, thick thighs and legs, long arms etc.

Sometimes this produces a fighter, sometimes it means nothing. You had string beans who could take sunday punches like popcorn, and then you've had guys who look like fullbacks who had glass jaws.

I was looking at an Alex Stewart fight recently. From a boxing standpoint, he had a great physique, 6'3, long arms, very thick-set legs, solid mid-section, he looked like he could've been a fullback, but of course he was a weak-chinned fringe contender.

So it really becomes just a subjective enterprise. But I can tell who does NOT have good physiques ie the wide majority of the current HW division.

And having seen Wlad Klitschko fight, I have to say, seeing him in person it's pretty incredible to see that guy's physique, he literally looks like some sort of carved statue. And at 240 on a 6'6 frame he's fairly lean for his frame.

The Alex Stewart analogy is a good one. A man who had legs like a linebacker and a neck to match. But supposedly a weak chin?

Respectfully we could probably both argue Steward had a decent chin? what do you think? I was thinking along the lines, some of Stewarts knock out losses were more due to his mental fragility eg against Tyson where he seemed intimidated and had lost the fight before he went in and exhaustion eg Moorer? rather than a weak chin. Its a toss up i guess

Certainly he showed pluck and a chin against Foreman, Holyfield and at times Moorer who was considered a powerpuncher moving up to HW.

But my nitpicking aside i know what u mean and understand your overall point and it is a good one......... sometimes the fighter doesnt look the part but is.

But I still think more often than not the build can tell you a lot. For every skinny assasin like an Arguello there are another 5 skinny light punchers like say a guy of that era Jim McDonnell

Still its a trick one to argue convincingly.

Bean had a thick fat neck almost moulded into his back, and not much chin exposure either, for all the globules of fat on his neck and throat protecting it......you could argue he had the perfect mug for boxing!

Sonny Liston: 84" reach (as long as Lennox Lewis!); 14 inch fists. Powerful leg muscles on a man who understood that power originated in his legs, and understood how to generate that power effectively. Small enough at 6'1" and 215 pounds to have good mobility. I think Liston had the perfect physique for a heavyweight boxer.

I would say when Primo Carnera fell on top of Max Baer -- that would be the best physique I saw on a boxer!

Maybe the best physique . . . but the best body I've ever seen on a boxer was a photo of Marilyn Monroe hugging Art Aragon! :DD :DD

What if George would have become a boxer?

Gambler do you think you should start a thread on that topic?
