It wasn't one of his quit jobs (Gross, Foreman) but the fight just got out of hand for him, & he kind of was reduced to being a tamed force until he unraveled, which, from memory, I think was around the 8th or the 9th. It might've been his first loss, couldn't be assed looking it up. At any rate, it was a setback. Cooper was gaining some pretty decent exposure at the time as a rising fighter, & this was unexpected. He said Williams' jab was just something he couldn't negotiate, couldn't get his head around (literally, as well as figuratively). His words.

going strictly off a near 50 yr old memory here, but i remember williams schooling him pretty good, pushing him off. then he wobbled him quite badly near the end of the final round and cooper did not come out. he looked bad.

Reportly Cooper had quit on his stool between rounds during the fight with Carl"the Truth"Williams too for USBA hvwt title in 1987.
But I read somewhere else that it was his trainer Joe Frazier who stopped that fight in between rounds.
Cooper was apprently addicted to cocaine and other drugs at this point.
(apparently he started on it earlier that year after the win over Willie de Witt as a heavyweight in Febuary 1987)

(Cooper had turned pro at age 18 years as a cruiserweight under Joe Frazier in 1984.)
Joe Frazier said in his autobiography SMOKIN JOE,that he had taken Cooper down to South Carolina to train for the Williams fight ,to get him away from those
"cocaine-sniffing scamboogahs" ,but somehow Cooper found a connection down in SC.
IMOP more likely someone came down from Philadelphia to SC with Cooper who had the cocaine).

Looking at what happened with Reggie Gross, I find it more believeable he quit of his own accord. He also said he had a lot of problems with Williams' jab, & it was at something of a high point in Cooper's career, making it less likely, IMO, Frazier would give him up.

Watch for Richie's expression after the first KD.
'

that's priceless! Did a liver shot play a role in that KD or was it the after effect of a head shot?

It was a left to the body.

Frazier later said in his autobiography that in the Carl Williams fight,Cooper had "Quit on his stool".
There is some conflicting info in a couple of sources as whether Frazier was still at least managing Cooper when he fought Foreman.

Anyone here seen Bert Cooper vs Mike Weaver,Feb-27-1993.
"The Brawl at the Wall".
for the vacant NBA hwvt title.
It was held in Beijjing, China and was historic event.
The first boxing card seen in China and one one of the most widley seen boxing broadcasts in history"
Except I dont remember watching it on television here.
It was a terrific fight(reportly)Cooper had Weaver in trouble several times on the verge of a knock out ,but ran out of gas
and Weaver squeked by to win.

Not too long after the fight with George Foreman in 1989,Cooper reportly used his last 6 thousand dollars to put himself
into a drug rehabilitation center.
He claimed he was clean in 1991,for his last 8 fights before he fought Holyfied(winning 6 out of the 8).
However 2 weeks after the fight with Michael Moorer in May 1992,according to the newspapers, the police arrested
Cooper in a sweep in a bad part of the town of Chester PA,in an area know for heavy drug use and found a cocaine pipe on him and a small bag of white powder in his sock.
He may have been clean up to the Moorer fight and had a relapse after it ,or perhaps the other, so close but yet so far, near win to become the heavyweight champion over Holyfield, but who knows.

I wonder what was the reason Po'uha retired. He was only 29 at that time, and I'd say he was pretty decent boxer overall. He gave Golota run for his money despite being really overweight (although I have to admit I didn't watch his last fights when he started losing to mediocre opposition)
