York Hall virgin
Re: York Hall virgin
Best venue I've been to for view / atmosphere. If you can catch a big name on the way up, it's awesome.
Froch vs Magee and Haye vs Frag were brilliant nights there.
Bit of a drive from Nottingham, usually got back at 3am but well worth it.

I believe Steve Wood has a show on there a week on Friday. Not been myself but I've been told by many knowledgable people that it's the best venue in the country atmos wise.gasman wrote:Colne Muni sounds interesting, are there any cards planned for there at the moment?slapbangwhallop wrote:I had a ticket for a ringside seat but met up with with a couple of people inside and sat (or stood) at the very back of the hall.MatthewS wrote:How did you find it? I enjoyed it, I was off duty so had been partaking in a couple of the East End tasty and flavoursome libations, which made for a good night.
Its no Colne Muni in Lancashire - still the best venue I have been to.
Re: York Hall virgin
I also went to Froch-Magee at the York Hall and Froch-Westerman before that. My favourite venue by a long way, having been to boxing events at Manchester MEN, Millennium Cardiff, Excel London, Olympia London, Earls Court London, Alexandra Palace & Wembley Arena.G0mez wrote:Best venue I've been to for view / atmosphere. Witter-Lynes was another York Hall fight I saw where the winner went on to become a world champion.

Re: York Hall virgin
York hall gone along time since boxing, will they ever fix the damage or another nail in the coffin?
Re: York Hall virgin
Seems the Copperbox is the preferred venue for promoters these days (remember when FW used the Excel a lot - which was a dire venue).

Re: York Hall virgin
I remember taking a friend for Hatton v Ray Olivera. Mistakenly went to the London Arena as I didn't realise it had closed down. Commented on the way there that 'it's a bit quiet tonight...' and arrived to find that the place had closed down. Embarrassment all round. Did eventually find the Excel just in time.Ruthless-RKO wrote: ↑28 Sep 2026, 16:32Frank had his own venue at one point.
London Arena, in Millwall.

Even Matchroom, they used to use Bowlers Exhibition and Victoria Warehouse for smaller shows.levi billups wrote: ↑28 Sep 2026, 16:57I remember taking a friend for Hatton v Ray Olivera. No idea what they even hold. Surely less than 1000 fans.

Only been once when I was little it was brilliant
Re: York Hall virgin
Great place, usually you get a proper crowd there, and far less coked up morons than you see at an arena or stadium show
Re: York Hall virgin
Think they'll definitely fix it, as it's used for a lot more than boxing. This is why the closure was extended:

Re: York Hall virgin
My favourite memory was Kevin Mcbride (conqueror of Tyson) losing a tight decision to Matt Skelton in Prizefighter. Shook some well wishers hands in the the lobby and then just walked out of the venue down the street. Classy
Re: York Hall virgin
Famous boxing venue York Hall has been closed until next year following an outbreak of a deadly bacteria
The venue has played host to top boxers, including Tyson Fury, Anthony Joshua and Lennox Lewis.
Engineers discovered Legionella bacteria at York Hall in Bethnal Green during a routine inspection, leading to its closure in July.
Since then, further inspections have been carried out at the site with traces of the bacteria found in the venue’s hot water system. The bacteria can cause Legionnaires disease – a form of pneumonia – when inhaled with water vapour or mist
It has been reported that work to remedy the problem could cost Tower Hamlets Council more than £900,000
Councillors have been told that the venue is unlikely to reopen before 2027

What a shame. The best small hall venue in the UK. So many top boxers fought there. Lloyd Honeyghan, David Haye, Carl Froch, Colin McMillan, Paul Ingle, Chris Eubank, Nigel Benn, Johnny Tapia, John H. Stracey, Ricky Hatton, John Ruiz, Alan Minter, Cornelius Boza Edwards, Maurice Hope, Michael Watson, Wayne Mcullough, Glenn Johnson, Nikolai Valuev, James Toney and many moreGlass Joe wrote: ↑25 Oct 2026, 15:53 Famous boxing venue York Hall has been closed until next year following an outbreak of a deadly bacteria

Re: York Hall virgin
I went to the boxing there a few times, originally to see Darren Barker (Lenny Daws co-headline). Also Esham Pickering vs Matthew Marsh, a card again with Lenny Daws on.
Also saw Matchroom 9 ball pool events, including a couple of years of the Mosconi Cup in early 2000's and World Cup 9Ball a few years later on. All the pool ones were free tickets (either free entry or given away by "competition").
You could feel the history there in a way that the modern arenas don't have.
