Robin Reids chances?

Yeah, Calzaghe will meet him head on but I don't think he's up for the task these days, and will be taken out in similar fashion.
Reid was terrible - where was the boxing skills that got him the Olympic medal way back in Barcelona? This version of Reid doesn't throw any punches, looks to clinch and constantly foul/complain instead of getting down to business and throwing leather.
His counters were way off - often sailing over the back of Lacy. I remember seeing this happen in his fight with that Frenchman on Bravo, and also in the Brian Magee fight. His only chance these days is to land one big shot, and Lacy with his tight guard was having none of it.
Someone like Anthony Mundine in front of Lacy last night would have been interesting - someone who matched his speed (maybe quicker) and boxed and moved against his marauding. Someone who actually JABBED. Lacy was crying out for a stinging fast left in the mush but Reid just couldn't provide.
That's why I would like to see Lacy beat the likes of Mundine, Kessler, Danny Green before facing Calzaghe. These are among his generation of the 168lb division; it may look good just now defeating the old school like Reid and Calzaghe, but history will show they were at the end of their careers.
BTW, that 'officiating' was shocking. Much worse than Parris in Hatton - Tsyzu. You rarely see such a blatant hometown job as that.

Disappointing performance by Robin Reid I am really not sure he has 'the fire' for a tough fight anymore and is obviously at the end of a to be fair very good Boxing career.
Lacy was just too fast, too intense and too determined for the faded Reid. At times I thought Reid was trying to fustrate and 'old man' Lacy out of the fight, but he seemed unable or unwilling to back that tactic up with any sustained attacks. Manos de Oro was spot on with his comments about Lacy being a little open to the jab, something Robin didn't even seem to try for any great length of time.
As for the knockdowns Reid suffered I really don't think Reid was ever seriously hurt it was more a case of his mental resistance being knocked out of him than anything else more of a 'thinkdown' than a 'knockdown'.
The referee was poor I thought even though Reid made things a lot worse by using some dirty tactics. An experienced fighter like Reid I would have thought would have known better than to annoy a 'hometown' referee.
The first knockdown should not have been counted in my opinion although it did look as if Reid played on it a little by going down, but hey I didn't take that shot. And there is the famous Boxing rule "Protect Yourself At All Times".

Yeah as soon as i saw the ref being announced i thought it was going to be a hometown job, i had never seen him before and you need an experienced guy in there. I mentioned on an Aussie forum i use occasionally i expected a dirty fight from Reid, he has become a lot more of a calculated dirty fighter since the Ottke loss and his time in the wilderness, if you watch the Calzaghe fight he had a point deducted for persistent fouling.
I think the thing with Reid is he is frustrated with himself because he cannot do the physical things he used to be able to do and with a fast and aggressive guy like Lacy that was always going to be a problem. Reid cannot fight for three minutes of a round or sustain attacks and it showed through, Brian Hughes could see that despite the fact Reid was ok he was starting to get beaten up...just watch his eyes roll after that final uppercut.
Reid should just retire i think he is not far from being shot to be honest, he cannot compete with the top level guys and it was a shame to see him in tears after getting stopped but he should have walked away last night with his dignity instead of kicking up a fuss about the fight. The ref's decisions were bad at times, when Reid was floored it was due to incompetent refereeing, calling a time out and then administering a count was ridiculous when Reid was caught with a flush punch.
On Lacy's style as impressive as he was i feel a guy who can match him for fitness and has variety to his work can give him troubles, is Calzaghe the man to do it? Time will tell. I feel Lacy-Kessler would be interesting, Kessler is very solid and compact and does everything well rather than being outstanding. Lacy was open for the jab and a fast mover would keep him confused, Reid was perfect as he stayed stationary and lacked speed in his combinations....the Reid of 6 or 7 years ago would have been a different matter, i would have tipped him to beat Lacy In fact.

I thought Robin Reid fought on very bravely when it was an impossible piece of work for him, he was miles behind and never ever looked like landing anything worthwhile on that little head of Lacy`s.
No sparing for two weeks and training by the pool
the little chance he may have had was wiped out 2weeks from fight-night.
I`m sure I heard him say to Brian Hughes something about timing, no surprises if he realized his was all out.
Lacy for me is effective at what he does, he has huge shoulders and looks as if he has over done the bench press but his little head tucked down behind those shoulders looks pretty hard to bounce one off.
Calzaghe is there for the taking about now and a big puncher is his worst nightmare, he is catching more shots and Lacy does look heavyhanded enough to bull Calzaghe about.
I still don`t rate Lacy that highly but he may just be the best at the weight.
John Murray was just excellent, he looked very experienced for his young age, and wasn`t he clever with his head in the clinches

I'd just like to add though that I didn't think Reid looked especially old in there I thought his hand speed (for Reid) was okay and his movement (again for Reid) was generally okay. He was rusty, but I don't think old.
It was a dissapointing display, and I was a tad surprised that he didn't go for it from the 6th round (when it was already beyond him to win on points). Why didn't he fight as he did vs Calzaghe and Petrious.
It was the most impressive I have been of Lacy, I didn't like his strength vs Sheika and Vanderpol at times he looked out strength vs those two. However, he out muscled the usually strong for the weight Reid. I think that really surprised Reid.
On the ref, I actually didn't think he was overly bad.
Some situations he handed well. I thought Reid deserved all of his point deductions as there were some clear fouls that Reid did that just went warned - including deliberate rabbit punches and a shove.
I didn't think Lacy deserved any point deductions - he digressed alot less than Reid and I don't think the low blows were too bad.
He did make too critical errors though - the handling of the first KD was wrong, it shouldn't have been scored - don't think Lacy deserved a point deduction though as it was retalisation/momentum. He should have not counted and given Reid time to recover.
Also, he handled the major lacy low blow wrong - yes he didn't count, but he was "egging" on Reid to get up and carry on. It should have been "take your time, you have 5 minutes".
So these were critical errors, but his only errors.
He called the Doctor in at the right time.
The crowd were awfull though, really onto Reid's case.

In all fairness to the ref what was he to think of Robin from the beginning of the first round.
Probably felt like throwing him out then :(
