Who wins (crazy but serious)

Post by The End »

John Ruiz vs Harry Greb.

It was Brought up recently in some thread.

I am of the opinion that Ruiz takes this one as Greb wouldn't be able to handle the greco roman style boxing of Ruiz.

I don't think Greb's come forward style would be effective against the much larger man especially when being wrestled.

Greb wins and he wouldn’t need the juice.

Clinching wasn't invented in 2000. You're not sure that Greb encountered any octopuses is his 300+ fights? OK

Exactly. Ruiz knew how to fight dirty, but Greb knew all the tricks in the book.

I've got to hand it to you, I never ever thought I'd read a John Ruiz -v- Harry Greb post. :P

Greb is far superior to Ruiz & no amount of man hugging would stop Greb from tearing strips off Ruiz.

Is Ruiz a member of this forum? I ask because, absurdly, someone has voted for him. As if Ruiz had anything at all about him to trouble Harry Greb, he would have been bewildered ( I imagine) :box:

I thought it was maybe a joke. Greco roman wrestling was popular back then was it not? Greb most likely faced many fighters better than the quiet man who could clinch just as well as he. I know John beat holyfield, but Evander was obviously ill, from conditions caused by anything from hard fights, serious ailments and side effects from steroid abuse.

Well, I have seen Ruiz fight, All I have on Greb is those suspect writers word. But from the stories they tell, he wasn't bad at all.

Wonder what stories those writers would have created about Ruiz. A romance novel perhaps?

Though no one has picked "Draw" to date....I imagine some artists may have been inspired....by the passion that Ruiz can display.

Hmm come to think of it I haven't voted.....I'm votin' for the "artist's take" on this one.

There is more chance of that than them saying he was a great fighter. Which going strictly by the books is what he would have to be to defeat Greb.

Greb beat far better, stronger, bigger, and more skilled jab and grabbers than frikkin' Ruiz . .

Prime for prime Ruiz doesn't hear the final bell.

Agreed Greb with his wealth of experience surely saw a few Ruiz types in his day and he probably saw guys that did it better. Greb would outwork the hell out him and win a lopsided decision most likely

I think Greb wins this. And as a general rule they clinched much better in Greb's day than Ruis.

But, who do you say was far better, stronger, bigger and more skilled Jab and grabber than Ruiz?

Ruiz, like it or not, was almost certainly a top 10 heavyweight fighter of his decade or at least pretty close. I am not so sure all that many of Grebs opponents can boast the same thing. And of those that are, i can think of many who were actually bigger and stronger than Ruiz. without looking up, Quentin Romero Rojas, might be the closest to fit the bill. Greb would certainly be the smallest opponent that Ruiz faced, and probably the lightest hitting. There are challenges here for both fighters. At the right odds, i think Ruiz is worth a bet, although i would be going with the smaller Harry Greb.

Ruiz was not a big heavyweight by any means . . he was a natural 200 lber who balooned up to the 230s-40s like the other soft tubbies of his era. Bill Brennan, Jack Renault, and Miske were as big or bigger than Ruiz and infinitely more skilled. Willie Meehan was a master at quickly getting shots in and then smothering.
Who cares if Ruiz was top 10 in his complete crap era . . just shows how bad the era was/is.

I serously doubt Greb knocks out Ruiz. Greb may be fast, and skilled enough to befuddle him to a victory but ko? Naw.

Well to simply argue the point. Have any of you boxed? (Not belittling anyone's opinion) Out of the lot that says yes have you ever boxed a much larger man around 70-80 pounds larger that was in shape? It can be a different ball game. Off of the names alone it is a no brainer. Greb is a legend and in my top 3 all time. Ruiz is...well Ruiz. I just don't believe a come forward windmill style would suit the smaller fighter too well in this match-up. It's easy to point out what Roy Jones and Toney did but they were slick and elusive and also bulked up. An example of a very good swarmer vs a mediocre giant would be Adamek vs Michael Grant. Adamek struggled greatly and Grant is horrid but the size alone troubled him . Not saying Greb couldn't pull it off but this isn't a walk in the park.

Yes I've boxed as a bantam as a boy and feather as a youth, I sparred heavies and it was hard, I've a chronic neck and sternum injury because of it.

However I am not Harry Greb, nor one millionth the fighter he was so its not a valid comparison. Ruiz is shite, Greb is great with a reputation for beating the crap out of heavier men, guys who would wipe the street with Ruiz.

When I was an amateur middleweight I sparred many times with heavyweights who had 60-90 lbs on me. The majority were novices and fairly slow (but not always) but I managed to hold my own most of the time and a few times just wear them out via movement and counters to the body.
These wern't world class guys, but I was not even state class. Now this is Ruiz, not a naturally big heavyweight and who was a pudgy 230, who is slow, and very limited skill-wise . . vs arguably the greatest fighter who ever lived who beat a number of heavyweights far better than Ruiz. This isn't even a question . .

Adamek a very good swarmer?? That's not even his style of fighting . . . Greb also was elusive, constantly changing angles and moving his head, plus it's very hard to set up shots on a guy constantly throwing at you. Ruiz, a plodding one-twer, would hardly land any clean punches at all.
