Battling Gahee

Post by bobmee »

In my research for a book on Tiger Flowers I came across an obituary for Battling Gahee, which suggests the two records under that name on the record site should be merged. One Battling Gahee is from Memphis and one from Toledo, Ohio. He died in a veterans hospital in Dearborn, Michigan - exact date uncertain, but the newspaper obit was on 17th June 1948. His age was given as 48, making him born in 1899 or 1900. The obit, in the Toledo Blade, gave his address as 418 Pinewood Avenue, Toledo, and said he had died after a year's illness. In his prime he had sparred with Jack Dempsey, and had moved to Toledo from Memphis in 1919 after serving in WW1, hence the veterans hospital. He had been employed at the Champion Spark Plug Co. and left a wife, Novel, and son, James. He still had family back in Memphis.

Battling Gahee was my grandfather. James Gahee was my father. His birthdate is October 8, 1895. I have pictures and a few articles of him but not an obituary. I would like to know where I can find it. My email is [email protected] Would appreciate it if you could help me.

Your grandfather's obituary was published in the Toledo (OH) Blade of June 17 1946 (p.10). It is available here:

Thanks for the obituary. There is a chapter on him in the book: The Sundowners-History of the Black Prizefighter by Author Kevin R. Smith
